Reports to: Children & Families Service Manager
Purpose of Job:
To enable families with a blind or partially sighted child (aged 0-19 years) in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust area to access both universal and specialist services and to promote social inclusion through a range of opportunities designed to meet their specific needs.

Main Accountabilities:
1. To provide support to blind and partially sighted children (0-19 years) and their families In the Northern Health & Social Care Trust area.
2. To provide, advice, support and sign posting to professionals working with children with sight problems, particularly relating to opportunities in relation to provision of play, social development, learning and therapeutic services.
3. To liaise with hospital based Eye Care Liaison Officers
4. To set up support groups for both children and parents
5. To establish and maintain a network of links with agencies from the statutory sector, mainstream and specialist providers and other voluntary groups, e.g. parent groups.
6. To develop and deliver a range of events for children and/or families, including family days and weekend events.
7. To develop and deliver a range of training to other providers in response to identified needs.
8. To identify gaps in provision and develop opportunities and ways to increase or support access.
9. To provide support for children and/or families to activities delivered by other providers.
10. To manage a network of volunteers to provide support for activities.
11. To link children and families into other RNIB Group services and projects
12. To contribute to the development of strategy in relation to family support and early intervention.

1. Specialist Knowledge, Skills and Experience
1.1 A minimum of NVQ level 3 qualification or equivalent in a related area (e.g. Childcare and Education, Youth Work and Young people, Youth and Justice or equivalent) or direct experience of working with blind and partially sighted children/young people.
1.2 Experience of working with children and/or young people in a relevant setting.
1.3 Experience of planning and leading events for children and/or young people
1.4 Ability to use basic IT, including word processing and simple database packages.
1.5 Experience of working with parents/carers

1.6 Knowledge and understanding of children and/or young people with special educational needs (SEN).

Ability to build rapport quickly and easily establish relationships in order to work with a range of individuals, groups and organisations.
