Recruiting Posters: The Continental Army

We need YOU to support our army

In the name of his Excellency Geo. Washington, Esq.

Over the next couple of days you will be making recruiting posters for the Continental Army.

George Washington has just defeated the Hessians at Trenton, and confidence in his leadership has been restored after the disastrous New York Campaign.

Your job is to convince people to join the Continental Army, and you need to use your imagination, because people know that the Army can’t afford to pay them!

Day 1: You will be creating a rough draft of your poster in class, in your group. Each group member will be assigned to one of the following roles:

-Title creation – create a catchy title that will convince people to read your poster

-Visuals – create visuals that will convince people to join the army without having to

read accounts to be convinced

-Accounts of the Battle – choose portions of the various accounts of your group, to

incorporate onto your poster – these should only be excerpts of the accounts

-Text – use some inventive text to convince people that joining the American Cause is

the right thing to do; remember this needs to be good propaganda!!

For Homework Tonight: Write your final draft of your account of the Battle of Trenton. Remember that this should be written as if you were there!

You will also need to bring in any materials that you’ll need to finish your posters in class tomorrow.

Day 2: You will be turning in the final drafts of your Battle of Trenton accounts today.

You will also get the entire day to finish up work on your posters. Make sure you come ready to work, because you will only have one day to finish working on these!

For Homework Tonight: Each group member should be prepared to present what she/he contributed to the project to the whole class tomorrow. Prepare notes to speak for 1-2 minutes. NOTES WILL BE COLLECTED

Day 3: Today all groups will present their projects to the class!

Each group will be expected to give a thorough presentation to the rest of the class. This presentation will be your opportunity to “sell” your poster to the rest of us, so you should spend some time preparing for it! Try to make your presentation fun and interactive, including the rest of the class as participants.

This project will be worth a test grade. You will be graded both individually and as a group. Individually you will receive a homework grade for what you bring in, and your presentation notes and a test grade for your final product.

The work you group does in class will be a class work grade. The rubric below will be used.
