What a fantastic time we have been having in Nursery! We have been celebrating Diwali the Hindu festival of light. On Wednesday we had a special visit from Satya`s mummy who told us all about the story of Rama and Sita and how Hindu people celebrate Diwali. For snack we tried some delicious homemade Indian foods such as traditional rice pudding and potato pakoras. We then made some beautiful finger puppets with Miss Morgan to help us retell the story of the first Diwali. We also made some fabulous diva lamps using clay and then decorated them with sequins and sparkly glitter. Our teachers taught us all about Indian culture and together we found India on the globe. We then made rangoli patterns and we even dressed up in sari’s and wore bindi’s! Our teachers were very impressed with how we could move in time to the music! We learned that in India people give each other Happy Diwali cards, just like we do at birthdays and Christmas. We decided to make some for our friends! We have had so much fun and have learnt a lot! Maybe you could ask me all about Diwali at home.
On Friday we remembered all the soldiers who fought in the war to keep people safe. We watched a short movie about why people wear poppies. At 11am we took part in a two minute silence to show our respect. Some of us then decided to create poppy drawings during get busy time.
Reception also enjoyed learning about Diwali this week. They learned the story about Rama and Sita and enjoyed tasting Indian food. A big thank you to Satya’s mum for coming to in to talk to the children and for her time and effort preparing the food.
This week we have been looking closely at 2D shapes and their properties. The children have been using mathematical language to describe the shapes and also looking for shapes in and around our classroom. In particular we have looked at circles, squares, triangle sand rectangles.
The children have also been very enthusiastic about the icy weather. They have enjoyed exploring the ice they have found outside and have found smashing it even better! Next week we plan to take this experience further by planning an experiment linked to freezing and melting.
Reading books –Reading books will now be changed once a week on a Thursday. We will give children double the amount of books on a Thursday so that they still are reading the same number of books per week. Children will bring 2 books per week home unless parents have requested more.
In come and see the children have been learning about baptism. They acted out a baptism scene and looked at the different objects in church relation to a baptism.
Nursery: This week the children have been observing the changes in seasons whilst playing outdoors. This week for homework work we would like you to work with your child to make their own ice! Please discuss the changes that happen with you child and feel free to send any photographs into school.
Reception: Next week we are going to start to learn about cold climates and animals that live in the cold. For homework children can start to research these topics through books or the internet. It would be useful if they can bring in bits of information or books they have found so that we can start to create an information area in our classroom.
