In the struggle between Communists and Nationalists after WWII, though backed by the West Chiang Kai-shek was forced to flee to Formosa (Taiwan) in 1949. Mao declared mainland China, ‘The People’s Republic of China’ in 1949. Chiang Kai-shek ruled Formosa called ‘Taiwan, Republic of China’ which was recognized by the west as the legitimate government of all China by the West until the 1970s under US President Richard Nixon when The People’s Republic of China was recognized as the legitimate government of all China.
