Interior Spaces and Cultural Places: British Film and Trains in Motion

In my thesis I aim to produce an original cultural history of the British train interior and its relationship with the moving image. I explore both the train carriage and the cinema geographically and haptically in an interdisciplinary study that engages with constructed space and its inhabitation by individuals and groups. My primary research is integrated with theoretical understandings of subjects as diverse as film studies, history, geography and design.

2008-2009:MA Film Studies (Distinction), University College London

As part of my course I took modules including theories and practices of film, British war-time cinema and Russian and Nordic cinemas. My study culminated in a dissertation entitled An Uncanny Invasion: Foreign Filmmakers and Cinematic London in the ‘Swinging’ Sixties (supervised by Dr. Jann Matlock) which explored the relationship between foreign directors and the city as a gendered space.

2005-2008:BA Hons. Media Arts (First Class), Royal Holloway

My undergraduate course focused on the interplay between both the practice and theory of film, giving me valuable experience in academic and filmmaking situations.
