6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Reading Factory shoals Middle School

Greetings Parents/Guardians and Students:
Welcome to Reading! I am Mrs. Jeneen Sutton, and I will be your child’s Reading teacher for School Year 2017-2018. I am excited to begin this school year with your child at Factory Shoals Middle School, and work with him/her in reading goals and objectives to achieve a successful year. This syllabus should be kept in your child’s Reading binder for future reference.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: The content to be learned in this class is aligned with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Language Arts & Reading Common Core State Standards. We will be exploring literature through various fiction and nonfiction texts. My goal is to prepare all students for their next grade level and instill life-long learning values through reading.
CONTENT: System 44 is a foundational reading program designed for the most challenged struggling readers in Grades 3-12. Intentionally metacognitive, System 44 helps students understand that the English language is a finite system of 44 sounds and 26 letters that can be mastered. A combination of software-based and teacher-led instruction provides the student with adaptive, individualized learning as well as teacher-mediated direct instruction.
System 44 is designed so that the teacher, technology, and texts work together to deliver highly engaging, comprehensive, research-based instructional content. Through a combination of teacher-led and software-based instruction, the System 44 student is guided along a systematic path from phonemic awareness to fluent reading.
EXPECTATIONS I expect each student to come to class each day with a book for individual reading. I expect students to earn a homework grade by reading a Media Center book every two weeks. I expect all students in my class to have respect for their school, their fellow classmates, school officials, and most especially, themselves. I expect each student to be an active member of the classroom community by coming to class prepared, turning in all assignments on time, and participating in class discussions, reading, and activities. They should also take an active role in their learning by asking questions and reading. By doing so, all students are expected to master the skills and the Common Core State Standards.
Students’ grades in the class will be based on his/her performance in the following categories:

After day 3, work will be accepted at the teacher’s discretion and at that point, the highest grade a student can earn is a 50%. If a student is absent the day an assignment is due, he/she is expected to turn in the work immediately upon returning to class. Full credit for homework will only be given if the absence is excused with proper documentation. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for makeup work from the teacher. Student has three days from the date of absence to make up any missed work.
