Reading Response Log

(August and September)

Our reading response journals for July have been a place to record a summary of the main events in the reading selection. During the months of August and September we will begin to respond to literature by recording our thoughts, feelings, reactions, and questions about the main ideas or events in our reading selection. The response should still be labeled with the date, title of text, and page numbers read. Next, a quality paragraph should follow the set-up of your response log entry. A quality paragraph will be indented, include a variety of sentence types, and be thoughtful in content and length. A long list of sample reading prompts below could be used to craft your response:

ü  Is this book making you laugh, cry, cringe, smile, or cheer? Explain your thinking.

ü  What connections are there between this book and your life? Explain your thinking.

ü  So far, what are the best parts of this book? Why do you feel they are the best?

ü  What surprises have come about in the book so far? Why are you surprised at these events?

ü  What is confusing to you about this book? Are the events, characters, or language of the novel confusing?

ü  In what why are you like one of the characters? Explain your thinking.

ü  Do any of the characters remind you of your friends, family members, or classmates? Explain.

ü  Do you think the title fits the book? Explain why or why not?

ü  Which character would you like to be from the novel? Explain why.

ü  How has the book helped you in any way? Explain your thinking.

ü  What would you and your favorite character talk about in your conversation? Write about the beginning of the conversation.

ü  What do you know now that you didn’t know before? Explain why this information is important to you now.

ü  What questions in this book would you like answered? Explain your questions in detail.

ü  What do you think will happen next in the novel? What is your evidence? Explain.

ü  What do you think the author’s purpose is in writing this novel? Explain your thinking.

ü  Discuss why other sixth graders should read or not read this novel? Why or why not, explain.

ü  If I could step into the book, what would be the first actions you would do? Explain your journey.

ü  Create an award for the chapters you just read. What would it be and why? Explain your ideas.

ü  In detail, explain the personality of one of the characters in the book?

ü  What type of reader would enjoy these chapters? Why or why not, explain?

ü  Which parts of the chapter seem believable and unbelievable? Why?

ü  What are the problems introduced in the chapters you read? How would you solve these problems? Explain.

ü  Choose a food that represents what you read. Explain why that food represents the portion you read.

ü  Write a letter to a character in the novel telling this character a message related to the chapters you just read.

ü  Predict what will happen to two of the characters in your book? Justify your prediction by telling why you think these actions could actually happen.

ü  Think about the message the author is trying to convey in the chapters you read. Write a letter to the author discussing what you think about the message.

ü  What questions do you have about what was read? Explain your thinking.
