2.  Read ”Whale of a Lesson” on T294-T295. (Part of it is on Projectable 14.1) Look on page 67 in the CLL for directions for the minilesson.

3.  Complete vocabulary sentences.

1.  Read Helen Keller. Complete Projectable 14.5 together after reading the story. (Look on page 66 in the CLL for minilesson directions.)

2.  Do one of the vocabulary activities from pages 128-129 in the Word Study book. (You choose….There are 5 to choose from.)

3.  Introduce the skill by completing projectable 14.4.

4.  Have students complete page 199 in the practice book.

Grammar Lesson Plans

Proper Nouns

Standards:

L.2.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar usage when writing or speaking.
L2.2a Capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names.

Monday:

Tuesday:

Capitalize the first letter in the names of the days of the week

*Display Projectable 14.2.

*Review the days of the week.

*Explain to children that the names of the days of the week always begin with a capital letter.

*Model identifying the day of the week in this example sentence: Julie teaches art every Friday.

*Complete Projectable 14.2 with children

*Have students complete page 197 in the practice book.

Wednesday:

Write months of the year and holidays correctly.

*Display projectable 14.6. Explain to children that there are twelve months in a year, and that the names of the months always begin with a capital letter.

*Explain that, like the names of the months, the names of holidays also begin with a capital letter. Write Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, and Veterans Day on the board. Underline the capital letters.

*Model identifying the name of a month and a holiday in this sentence: In July, we celebrate Independence Day.

*Complete other examples on Projectable 14.6 with children.

Students will complete page 201 in the practice book.

Thursday-

Capitalize and underline book titles correctly

*Invite children to name some favorite books. Write the titles on the board. Explain that the first and last words begin with a capitals letter. Point out that each important word in the title also begins with a capital letter. The entire title is underlined.

*Write the cat in the hat on the board.

*Then model how to write it correctly.

*Write these other titles: the life of helen keller, dinosaur days.

*Have them underline and capitalize them correctly.

Friday-

*Administer assessment on proper nouns.

*Repeat the Sort on page 66 in the TE Book. Students will do this in their Word Study Journals.

*Blind Writing Sort on page 67 in TE Book.
