Lesson Activity/Experiences:
Monday:
SIPPS: Challenge Lesson 9
Reading: Watch video listed in “Engaging Student Activity” section; note how one of the ocean creatures must move very slowly to conserve energy. First, thumb through the story Deep in the Ocean with the class, noting the following text features: title page, table of contents, labels, bold print, captions, diagrams (pg 6 & 7), headings, text box (pg 15) and glossary. Discuss how each of these features help us understand how the book is organized, which then helps us understand the whole story. Practice using table of contents to turn right to a section of the story. Reread the story next, pausing again by examples of text features to review what they are/why they are there as well as reading for comprehension. Have students complete the text features worksheet.
Grammar: none today
·  Tuesday:
Reading: Watch video listed in “Engaging Student Activity” section; note how one of the ocean creatures must move very slowly to conserve energy. Reread the story Deep in the Ocean with the class, modeling and guiding students in asking/answering questions using question words. Define diagram for students and note diagrams on pages 6 and 7; discuss how the diagrams are organized and how a diagram makes information easier to understand.
Show students how to locate words in a dictionary. Practice using context clues to discover/reaffirm the meaning of bold print or other unknown words or phrases (use glossary or dictionary as needed). Students will complete the vocabulary page.
Grammar: Brainstorm product names/holidays/geographic places; have students complete the chart with a neighbor, writing at least 3 items in each column.
·  Wednesday:
SIPPS: Challenge Lesson 10
Reading: Review again what a main topic is in a story and how each paragraph helps us understand what it is. Reread story of the week together, pausing to review vocabulary OR tricky phrases with students as needed using context clues/dictionary. Call upon students to tell what the most important idea was in the paragraph after reading each paragraph (or what the most important idea was in each section before a new heading begins). Remind students of the main topic of the story (real life deep-sea creatures). Have students complete the main topic worksheet.
Grammar: capitalization worksheet; have students complete independently or with a neighbor. Save for tomorrow.
·  Thursday:
Reading: Reread story once more; split into two teams to play review jeopardy game in preparation for tomorrow’s test
