Mrs. Shisler’s Classroom Newsletter

March 5, 2012

Reading/Language Arts

Our focus skills this week are: new and review sight words, long e spelled with a y (at end of words), draw conclusions and contractions with not. Our stories this week include:

·  “Have You Heard This Silly Tale?”, “Little Rabbit” and “Henny Penny” from our Treasures book

·  the oral vocabulary story “Timimoto”

·  “The Gingerbread Man” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” from the Read Aloud Anthology.

The theme in our Treasure Reading is “Favorite Stories” this week. We will write about our favorite stories telling why we like them using character traits and story elements.

The main selection, “Little Rabbit” is a take-off of “Chicken Little” so we will be listening to and watching versions of ‘The Sky is Falling’.

Math

We will continue Topic 12, Comparing and Ordering Numbers and probably finish it up. Students will be working with place value to estimate the order of numbers on a number line, find numbers before, after and between and also order three numbers.

Social Studies/Health/Science

We will explore the steps in the ‘design process’ and culminate by designing a boat out of foil. Students will test out their floating boat by adding gram cubes to it to see how many it will hold before sinking.

Additional Classroom News

My teacher website is up and ready. Once you are on Sanderson from the Lancaster City Schools website, go to Teacher Websites and then my name. I have a quicklink to Spelling City available (Unit 4.5 this week) as well as class pictures, weekly homework, the Classroom Newsletter and others as needed. There are some pictures with more to come.

Due to new Health information, LCS’s nurse has requested that all snacks/treats distributed to students be store-bought NOT homemade. This is mostly due to students’ allergies. Store-bought items have all ingredients listed on the package and can be referenced if problems/questions occur. PLEASE abide by this.

Most grade card envelopes have been returned. If your child still needs to turn one in, you have a notice stapled to this newsletter. The 3rd grading period ends March 23rd. Hard to believe we are that far along in the school year!

The Lancaster Education Association is sponsoring a book drive to collect new and gently used books to donate to the Columbus Nationwide Children’s Hospital and doctors in Lancaster. Please consider going through your book collection at home and weeding out those your child doesn’t use any longer. The collection will take place through March 15.

Student Council is sponsoring a Spirit Day on Fri., March 9th. The theme this time is Hawaiian Day! Dig out those sunglasses, leis and Hawaiian print shirts!

We are continuing to keep track of our “Green Days” – days when students do not have to turn their Behavior Card. Student talking and interrupting had increased so thus the prompting of marking down our ‘good choice’ days. Ask to see your child’s Green Day Behavior Sheet on Friday – green checks are the days your child’s card stayed on green.
