1. Executive Director’s Reflection *

It was quite a 2014 NACC Conference, and we missed all of you who were not able to make it. The more than 400 who participated commented on the renewal of spirit that was the first part of the overall theme of Gateway to Compassionate Leadership.

I want to use this reflection to share some highlights from the final presentation given by Mr. Chris Lowney, who currently chairs the board of the Catholic Health Initiatives…

Not all of you were present at the Conference, so we again extend to all of you warm and hearty congratulations! 6. Volunteer of the Month: Deacon Roger Vandervest, MAPS, BCC *

Starting this May we are moving our “Featured Volunteer” item from Vision to NACC Now, and highlighting one volunteer per month. Deacon Roger Vandervest is on our Research Task Force and once upon a time, couldn’t imagine working with sick people. Click here to read the full article.

7. Update on the NACC Palliative Care and Hospice Certification Specialty *

The NACC Palliative Care and Hospice Certification Specialty Implementation Task Force will complete its pilot project soon. The project included six NACC board certified members who prepared materials and will be interviewed in Milwaukee June 24-25, 2014 by interviewers, including a physician or nurse practitioner in palliative care or hospice. The NACC Certification Commission will be reviewing the outcomes of the pilot project and making any revisions to the procedures and communicating them to the membership before the end of July. If you want and plan to apply for this certification specialty and send your materials by the next deadline, September 15th, you can access now the NACC Standards and Procedures at www.nacc.org/certification/standards-and-procedures.aspx. Any procedure changes should not be major ones and you will know about them by the end of July. For questions, please contact Lindsey Tews () or David Lichter ().

8. The value of chaplaincy? Priceless. *

Beyond funding and organizational charts, the value of chaplaincy is ineffable, Blair Holtey believes. To read his thoughts on encounters with others and the gift of presence in the May-June issue of Vision, click here.

9. May-June Vision is available for reading on the NACC Website! *

The May-June Vision issue is available to you. This issue’s theme is on the value of chaplaincy. Enjoy the issue. We are grateful to David Lewellen and the Editorial Advisory Panel for their continual leadership and guidance.

11. Some tributes to our recently deceased NACC member, Sr. Thomas J. Gaines, SC *

Tim Serban sent the following reflection on Sr. Thomas J. Gaines to some who worked with her in the Red Cross disaster deployments. “Dear Colleagues, I wanted to share some sad news with you today. I received a call from Chaplain Peggy Shaver in Ohio to inform us that Sister TJ Gaines who has long been a very dedicated supporter of the American Red Cross Disaster Spiritual Care Team has died. TJ was one of the originals trained in 1999 and has deployed to more disasters than some of the most seasoned disaster responders in our history. She would frequently drop in on our DSC orientations and trainings and always shared sage advice to the newly trained volunteers who were anxious and nervous about this whole prospect of responding to a disaster. TJ was diagnosed with a terminal condition about a month ago and elected hospice care in her final days and died peacefully yesterday with friends and family and Community gathered. Her service will be on Thursday and we will remember her fondly on Friday during our DSC orientation at the NACC conference this weekend. Please remember her and keep her family in your thoughts and prayers as she truly was a Chaplain’s Chaplain! And it is fitting that the words of Sir Harry Lauder would reflect the life TJ lived: “...We always knew which way she went by the light she left behind…” –Tim. Also, you can read Sr. T.J.’s obituary here.

2014 CONFERENCE

12. Thank you to all who prayed for the success of the 2014 Conference! *

We are deeply grateful to all of our members who were not able to attend this year’s national conference in St. Louis, but remembered the participants in prayer. You and your ministry were remembered daily in our liturgies. You were not far from us in spirit.

13. Thank you to all who made our 2014 National Conference in St. Louis a success! *

More than 400 participants gathered for our 2014 Conference in St. Louis and experienced its inspiration, information, and nourishment through plenaries, workshops, liturgies, business meeting, and social gatherings. We extend our special thanks to the Conference Planning Task Force, Bob Barnes, Peg McGonigal, Fr. Jack Crabb, Wilson Villamar, Angie Vorholt-Wilsey, and our NACC staff, for all their tireless planning and on-site support and guidance! We are grateful to our attendees for coming and for the sacrifices they made to do so.

19. NACC members raised $3,450 for the Guardian Angels Settlement Association! *
