1. Executive Director’s Reflection *

By the time of our next NACC Now in two weeks we will have listened (as in the case of yesterday’s liturgical readings) to end-time messages, commemorated Christ the King (this coming Sunday), celebrated Thanksgiving, and entered into the Advent season (December 1st). Wow! So many different markings of the year in these next two weeks!

However, when we reflect on a “day in the life of a chaplain,” I don’t think one day of ministry fails to touch on all of these themes in one way or another! In a day, we will be assisting people with decisions regarding the “end time” meaning of their lives when they face ultimate decisions as they grapple with illness, aging, and death. In a day, we find ourselves reflecting on the presence and power of grace in people’s lives, believing all has been redeemed in and under the power of Christ our King. All this leads to a profound gratitude for the gift of witnessing the healing power of Jesus. In this gratitude we continue to wait in joyful hope for the final coming of our Lord. We live in the already and not yet of our ministry: being with people as they face ultimate meaning, while being grounded in Christ’s redeeming love, in profound gratitude, in joyful hope.

Are we not blessed in this ministry!

A blessed Thanksgiving to you,

David A. Lichter, D.Min.

Executive Director

2. Would you consider serving the NACC in any of these capacities? *

NACC is currently seeking certified members to serve on two committees: the Governance Committee and the Education Advisory Panel.

The Governance Committee identifies needed expertise, talents, and skills for the Board to assist in the recruitment and succession process for Board members. The application can be found by clicking here.

The Education Advisory Panel provides ongoing feedback, guidance, and strategic thinking to NACC Staff and to the Executive Director by reviewing the Association's current work and assisting in developing and implementing a comprehensive educational strategy. The application can be found by clicking here.

The deadline for all applications is Friday, December 13th.

The success of the Association depends on the talent and efforts of all our members. Please prayerfully consider serving the Association on a committee, commission, or panel. If you have any questions about these or other leadership opportunities within NACC, please contact a member of the Nominations Panel: Jim Letourneau (), Theresa Edmonson (), Marybeth Harmon (), Jane Mather (), or Rosemary Partridge ().

3. Would you be willing to write about Palliative Care for the next Vision? *

The January-February issue of Vision will focus on palliative care. Articles are needed related to palliative care on topics including: palliative care advocacy across health settings; palliative care at the end of life; matching treatment plans with patient goals; and assisting healthcare leaders and others to advance palliative care across the care continuum. It you are interested in tackling one of these topics or another related to palliative care, please contact Laurie Hansen Cardona, Vision editor, at . Deadline is Dec. 2.

4. Wishing Laura Hansen Cardona blessings as she leaves Vision editor role! *

Please join me in thanking Laurie Hansen Cardona for the past six plus years of dedicated, professional, and highest quality service to the NACC as Vision editor. When the NACC contracted with Laurie to handle the editor duties, we knew we were getting a highly qualified and experienced editor; and we also knew (because Laurie told us) that she eventually wanted to be a full-time teacher of English as a second language. Well, the time has arrived, as she has been offered and accepted a full-time position in her dream job. We are so grateful for getting six plus years from Laurie! The January-February issue on Palliative Care will be her final issue. You can send Laurie your thanks for her excellent work and best wishes for her future at .

5. NACC will be looking for new editor of Vision. *

With Laurie’s departure the NACC will be looking for another Editor for the Vision. With Laurie, this was a contracted rather than a staff position. In the coming days, we will examine the scope of the responsibilities, the time needed to edit/produce an issue, and determine how best to move forward. If you have editorial experience, and want to be potentially considered for this responsibility, please let David Lichter () know in the next week.

8. Perhaps the two replies tell us that few are working in patient discharge situations. *

In the past two NACC Now’s we invited members to let us know who of our members are involved in patient discharge, and how it has been able to affect chaplaincy service beyond acute care. We received two replies, and one of those wanted to learn more. Perhaps this response tells us that only one of our members is involved at the time of discharge. If any systems are exploring how they might do this, we would appreciate hearing about those efforts as well. If you or your system is exploring this, please let us know by emailing Cindy Bridges (). We want to schedule a conference call with those who respond to learn from one another, and to identify practices that can benefit our members. Thank you!

9. The November/December Vision is now available on the NACC website!

The November/December Vision issue is available on the NACC website! This issue’s theme is "Using Art and Music to Enhance Ministry." Included with the many informative articles is a vocal recording by chaplain and liturgical music composer Carey Landry. Remember that you no longer need your member number to access the Vision; just go to www.nacc.org/vision. Continued thanks to Laurie Hansen-Cardona and the Editorial Advisory Panel for their excellent work!

2014 CONFERENCE

10. 2014 Conference Planning Task Force News *

The 2014 Conference Planning Task Force has selected all workshops, and is finalizing the brochure to be sent to printers by early December. Watch for your copy of the brochure after the new year. Have you already blocked out May 17-20, 2014? Sure hope so! Look forward to seeing you in St. Louis!

Also the Task Force will meet at the Conference site, Union Station, St. Louis, the weekend of December 13-15, to devote more in-depth time to planning, and visualize the space. Each year this helps the Task Force to ensure a smooth and successful conference. We are deeply grateful to the Task Force members (www.nacc.org/conference/default.aspx#tf) who are giving up a weekend right before Christmas to plan on our behalf. Thank you!

11. Are you familiar with the writings of our plenary speaker, Wendy Cadge? *

Are you familiar with the writing of Wendy Cadge, an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at Brandeis University? She teaches and writes about religion in the contemporary United States, especially as related to healthcare, immigration and sexuality. She authored Heartwood: The First Generation of Theravada Buddhism in America http://goo.gl/aAyLQB and many articles. Her most recent book is Paging God: Religion in the Halls of Medicine, www.wendycadge.com/paging_god.php. You can read the preface and first chapter here: http://goo.gl/D4UpXc. A very familiar scholar to us, Harold Koenig, MD of the Center for Spirituality, Theology & Health, at Duke University Medical Center, commented about Wendy’s book: “In Paging God, Wendy Cadge opens a window into faith as experienced by hospital caregivers, presenting the narratives of nurses, chaplains, physicians, and other members of the hospital team as they care for people of diverse religious traditions. Fascinating and illuminating, this book is a revelation.” www.wendycadge.com/paging_god.php
