Can you imagine what life would be like without paper? You would have to go without books, newspapers, tissues, toilet rolls and cardboard. Believe it or not, even the carton from which you drink your favourite fruit juice is made of paper too.

The Chinese were the first people to make paper. It was invented by T’sai Lun for an empress who wanted cheaper writing materials. At the time, the Chinese were using silk scrolls, which were scarce and costly. From China, the craft of paper making spread to Japan, Central Asia, Europe and America.

In the early days of paper making, rags from linen and cotton were used. Later, esparto grass and straw from cereals such as wheat, oats and barley were tried. More and more paper was needed as people became better educated and more interested in books.

It is not surprising that the paper making industry is important in many countries in Europe and America, for they have huge forests. The wood is changed into pulp- a raw material for making paper. Large quantities of clean water are needed. Paper-mills are built on the banks of rivers and lakes. Electricity is also required to operate the machinery.
