Just when we think Fall is in full swing, we have more 70+ degree days! The weather makes it hard to believe, but November is upon us and we are already almost halfway through the second quarter of the 2011-2012 school year. We are thankful for the amazing parent partnerships we have developed here at WoodlandSchool. One of the most successful ways you can help support your children is to stay in touch with teachers. An important way to do this is to attend Parent Teacher Conferences scheduled for November 21-23. If you have not yet scheduled a time, please contact your child’s teacher.

READ READ READ! There are many reading incentive programs throughout the course of the school year, all designed to help motivate students to read as much as possible! It is vital that we instill not only a love for reading but also the importance of reading for information to help students gain independence in their learning. One of the reading incentives currently in play is the SIUE Men’s Basketball 1000 Minute Reading Club. Students have until winter break to turn in their reading logs, totaling at least 1000 minutes of reading! All students will receive a free ticket to an upcoming SIUE Cougars Basketball game! Happy Reading Bobcats!

Student Council will be sponsoring a food drive during November to help support families in need with the upcoming holiday season. Specific information will come home over the next few days. Please consider donating to our cause and help reinforce for our students how great it feels to give to others!

November’s Word of the Month: RESPECT! Respectful people see all people as valuable and important. They treat others the way they want to be treated and show others courtesy and dignity. They appreciate people who are different from them. We teach students that they act respectfully when they:

Speak politely to their parents

Take good care of things borrowed

Obey teachers and other adults

Choose not to tease because it hurts feelings

Wear a helmet and obey safety rules when riding a bike

Give up their chair to an older person

Listen carefully to someone else’s opinion, even if they disagree

Respectfully,

Tara Fox

Safety Reminders!

Please don’t forget that parent pickup is at the top of the hill, between LincolnMiddle School and Woodland. We have a staff member who monitors students during that time to ensure their safety. Parents should NOT park in the LincolnMiddle School lot to pick up students at the top of the hill. This poses a very dangerous situation. Students will also not be allowed to walk through the parking lot unattended. Please remember that everyone’s time is valuable, and with patience we can ensure that our students are safe!

By respecting myself, other people and their ideas, we will have a creative and productive school.

Grade Level Goodies!

Terrific Third Grade!

November Showcase: Mrs. Updyke

The third grade students in Mrs. Updyke's class work hard to put the final touches on their Fall persuasive writings.

Fabulous Fourth Grade!

November Showcase: Mr. Foster

With the induction of Woodland’s brand new Technology Room, students in Mr. Foster’s class have had the opportunity to integrate technology into our workday! Students have and will be taking advantage of different types of enrichment activities, learning games, PowerPoint presentations, and other types of web-based extensions. As seen here, we were practicing our multiplication facts while racing cars with other students online. We had a blast!

Fantastic Fifth Grade!

November Showcase:

Mrs. Kierbach

These future actors are pouring over their Reader’s Theater scripts. They are vying for the “Reading Idol” title in Mrs. Kierbach’s class.

Our PTO Partnership

Hello Woodland Families!

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful fall so far! The year is moving along quickly.

After a successful fundraiser, the PTO is continuing to help the kids at the school. Exceeding the financial goals for the year will allow the PTO to find additional ways to better the children’s education. Thanks to everyone who donated time and money to the fundraiser!

We also are currently collecting all Box Tops Points. Please send all Box Tops in to your child’s teacher. Another easy way to earn money for the school is using the Schnucks eScrip card. If you do not have one, you can pick one up next time you are Schnucks. A small percentage of every purchase made is given to the school.

In October students visited the Accelerated Reader store for the first time. Thanks Jenn Earle, Pam Osley, and all volunteers who helped get this running for the year. Also, thanks to all the parents who helped make the first classroom party of the year successful!

If you have any questions or ideas, please let me know! Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 8 at 7:00 pm in the MediaCenter. Please note this date has changed since the beginning of the year.
