About us

ReachOut is an award winning charity that changes the lives of young people from disadvantaged communities in London and Manchester through one-to-one mentoring. We provide academic support and character education to help young people get a better start in life and go on to achieve future goals.

We work with over a thousand children every year, giving them the confidence and skills they need for a brighter future, but it doesn’t stop there – we aspire to make a real and long term positive impact on the communities we work in by encouraging young people to volunteer in their local area and eventually to become mentors themselves who go on to change the lives of others.

The ReachOut Club and Academy projects are long established programmes offering young people one-to-one academic mentoring and fun activities on weekday afternoons. Young people aged 9 - 16 take part, with over 100 young people participating weekly.

The Club project runs exclusively in primary schools (year 5 – year 6). The Academy project runs exclusively in Secondary school (year 7 – year 11). For more details on each programme visit our website:

Job Description

ReachOut are looking for reliable, enthusiastic and creative Project Leaders to deliver our ReachOut Club and Academy projects in Manchester between February 2016 to June 2016. We are also recruiting project leaders for next academic year (October 2016 – May 2017). Please indicate in your covering letter which period you would like to apply for. On the projects, you’ll use your experience to deliver effective sessions for the young people as well as support the volunteers and give feedback.

Job Title:ReachOut Club/Academy Project Leader

Contract:Sessional Staff Casual Work Contract

Location:Manchester/Greater Manchester

Salary:£7.50 per hour

Start date:TBC

Hours:From 6 hours per week, must be available to deliver the project delivery can range from Monday to Friday Please state on your application which days you are available. Sessions are not delivered during school and University holidays.

Project Leader Role Summary:

  • Responsible for planning and delivering a 2 hour mentoring session each week for 10/15 children which includes managing and supporting the volunteer mentors.
  • Each session will focus on either key stage 2 or key stage 3 numeracy or literacy and character development.
  • You will be paid for 6 hours per session (preparation, delivery and travel time each week)
  • Project Leaders will be expected to attend training, meetings, and complete administration activities involving record keeping and take part in evaluation and monitoring activities as appropriate.
  • You must be available to deliver a project between either 2pm – 4pm, 3pm - 5pm or 6pm - 8pm. Sessions are not delivered during school and University holidays.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • The ability to assist in the planning and operating of a programme of activities for young people.
  • The ability to foster and develop relationships with young people.
  • The ability to work sensitively and constructively with young people from a wide range of differing social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • The ability to lead and work with in a team.
  • You must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing with young people, volunteers, and ReachOut staff.
  • The ability to contribute to appropriate monitoring and evaluation systems.

Personal Qualities

  • To be friendly, enthusiastic and creative, with an understanding of the issues facing young people in our society.
  • To be punctual and reliable with good organisational skills.
  • To demonstrate good people skills, confident dealing with children, volunteers and teachers.

Experience, Training and Qualifications

  • Experience of youth work in a paid or voluntary setting.
  • Experience of organising activities for young people in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Achieved GCSE or equivalent grade A to C in Maths or English, or, can demonstrate ability at this level.
