Re: “Talking Out” Residential Course for children 12 – 16yrs of age who stammer

This letter is to inform you about an opportunity for your child to attend an intensive residential therapy/activity week in NorthYorkshire.

The aims of the course:

  • To develop confidence in communicating
  • To develop a more positive attitude to speaking and decrease sensitivity to stammering
  • To develop strategies for managing stammering and increasing the feeling of fluency control
  • To develop problem solving and self help skills.
  • To develop positive thinking skills

There will be 16 places available for children in school years 8 – 12 who are aged between 12-16 years on 23rd October 2016.

The course is being organised by the Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Excellence Network for Stammering, in collaboration with Active Training and Education Trust (ATE) It is fully funded by Action for Stammering Children (

The residential course comprises:

  • Dormitory style accommodation
  • Three meals a day plus snacks
  • Travel from Harrogate Station
  • Organised activities and equipment

There will be an excellent therapist/young person ratio of 1:4, with additional monitors and support staff, from ATE throughout the day and night. Please look at ATEs website to find out more about the level of care ATE will provide your child while on the course.

There will be a local pre-course meeting arranged for all the young people and parents who are involved, on Tuesday20th September, 4.00 – 6.00pm at the Stammering Support Centre in Leeds. At this meeting, everyone involved in the week will be able to meet together. There will be presentations, information and the opportunity to ask questions about the course from the Speech and Language Therapists as well as Bewerley Park and ATE staff. Everyone who is offered a place on the course will be expected to attend.

Booking Conditions - Please read carefully

  • Children can only be accepted for a whole week, i.e. arriving on the first day and not leaving until the last day.
  • The course must have been recommended as a suitable form of therapy for your child by a speech and language therapist.
  • A.T.E./ Speech and Language Therapists will do all in its power to deliver the ‘Talking out’ programme as set out. However, we do reserve the right to cancel or alter the course if circumstances beyond our control make this unavoidable. Parents would be informed at once of any such changes.
  • It is imperative that A.T.E/Speech and language therapists are told at application stage about any disabilities, social or behavioural problems which could cause difficulties for the child and / or other children at the ‘Talking out’ course. A.T.E/ Speech and language therapists/ reserves the right not to accept children we do not think we can support properly.
  • A.T.E/ Speech and language therapists also reserves the right to ask that parents remove a child if his / her behaviour is putting other children, staff or him/her self at risk. In such cases collection from the centre would be the responsibility of, and at the expense of the parent or guardian who signed the application. It is in nobody's interest (least of all the child's) to send someone to the ‘Talking out’ course who is likely to be unacceptably disruptive or aggressive.
