RE: CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS UNDER THE

PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF THE PENNSYLVANIA

LEGISLATURE 1961, JUNE 13, P.L. 282 (53

SECTION 8004) AND BETHLEHEM ORDINANCE NO.

3952 AS AMENDED.

WHEREAS, it is proposed to install signage at 400 Webster Street

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bethlehem that a Certificate of Appropriateness is hereby granted for the work.

SOUTH BETHLEHEM HISTORIC COMMISSION

CASE # 240 – It is proposed to install signage at 400 Webster Street OWNER: Bethlehem Area Pubic Library

The Commission upon motion by Mr. Evans and seconded by Ms. Pongracz adopted the proposal that City Council issue a Certificate of Appropriateness for the proposed work described herein:

1.  The proposal to install signage at 400 Webster Street was presented by Mary Kupferschmid.

2.  The new sign will be fabricated and installed as shown in the rendering submitted to the Commission.

3.  The open book sign will be approximately 27” x 36” on each side of the corner of the building

4.  The colors of the new sign are to be as shown in the rendering submitted:

Lettering Gold leaf

Sign edges Gold leaf

5.  The details of the attachment of the sign are to be reviewed with the Historic Officer. The attachments must be into mortar joints and not into the faces of the brick or into limestone. The limestone must not be damaged in any way.

6.  The existing incised lettering on the facades of the building will be gold leafed as proposed to enhance the legibility of the historic signage.

7.  The windows and doors of the building are proposed to be painted. The Historic Commission recommended modifying the color scheme to include a limestone color for windows in the red brick sections of the building and the brick red color for windows and doors in the limestone areas (as proposed.)

  1. The proposed work was approved by a unanimous vote.
