RCHS Application for Local Scholarships 2018

Deadline: February 28, 2018

INSTRUCTIONS

Inside this application are two categories of scholarships available to Rappahannock County High School Students—Local Scholarships and Headwaters Foundation Scholarships. You must create an application packet for both types of scholarships and use the checklist to indicate the scholarships to which you are applying and that the accompanying essays are included. Be sure that you meet the requirements for each scholarship. Completed application packets from RCHS students should be turned in to the RCHS Guidance Office*. Put your name on each page.

EACH PACKET should include:

1. The appropriate Cover Sheet of this application.

2. The Student Aid Report (SAR) with your EFC (Expected Family Contribution), a one-sheet form sent to you by the Federal Government. The SAR is easy to download at www.fafsa.gov. If you cannot fill out the FAFSA, speak to the Next Step Director or RCHS Guidance Department for assistance. For need-based scholarships this is required. For others it may be optional or not a consideration. It takes 3-5 business days for a SAR to be processed once the FAFSA is completed—do NOT wait until the last minute to file your FAFSA!!!

3. Any required essays.

4. Attach an updated resume with each packet

Unless specified, assume that the scholarship will pay tuition at an accredited 2- or 4-year college. Some will pay tuition at a technical school.

Essays: Different scholarships require different combinations of essays. Essays must be single-spaced and paper-clipped to the application. Put your name at the top of each essay sheet along with the essay’s number.

QUESTION # 1: (about 250 words): Why do you need this scholarship? How else will you finance your education?

QUESTION # 2: (about 250 words): Describe yourself, your achievements, and/or your goals for future study and work. (Current college students who are reapplying must include an official copy of their college GPA and intended major in this essay.)

QUESTION # 3: (A brief essay) How has a relationship with an important adult has influenced your life?

QUESTION # 4: (about 125 words) What community service activities have you performed/participated in while in high school and discuss what plans you have for continuing service during college.

QUESTION # 5: (A brief essay) Why do you want to go into education?

QUESTION #6: What are the two influences (event, person, meal, etc.) that have led you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry? Please be specific about how these things led you to make this decision.

RCHS Scholarship Winners will be announced at a school assembly. Invitations to the assembly will be mailed to parents of students who will be receiving a scholarship.

* Eligible students from outside RCHS should contact the donors directly to submit applications.
