RCC Training Meeting.

20 September 2012

Present:

Claire Taylor, Rachel Tyler, Christine Dove, Aisling Ni Chuinn, Amy Lily (part), Mark Rowe (part).

Apologies:

Sarah Gibbs, Ian Tokelove, Neil Hoxby, Neil Dishington.

Committee has given this sub group decision making powers, though any recommendations for coached expenses need to be agreed by the committee. This meeting should present application to Committee meeting.

Ideas for training.

1*, 2*,3*.

It was felt that star tests were a great way for people new to the club to progress. All can be run internally. It was also noted that 1* and 2* have been organized for September.

Concerns were raised that coaching/assessing in the dark is not ideal.

Proposed that RCC would approach IBC to request use of the club on weekends.

Proposed 1* dates could be set, but 2* should not be run at this time, unless particular demand expressed.

Noted 3* predominantly flat water skills, with some moving water. Noted in the past that the flat water coaching has been vital. Discussion about need to find venue where water is within remit.

Proposed to set dates and run at Hertford. (Lee Valley out of remit, and has historically not allowed assessments to take place there)

FSRT

Course can be run for 6 people, and takes a day.

Difficulty finding date before water gets too cold. May need to wait until next year.

Proposed that if using club at a weekend, the training/assessments, this should incur a small charge, which would incorporate a donation to IBC for use of the facilities.

Playboating.

Interest expressed in developing flat water and moving water play boating skills. Proposed this is raised after the winter.

Sea Kayaking.

Interest expressed in Introduction to Sea Kakaying. Although there is some expertise within the club, there is not the appropriate kit, so this is likely to need to be something purchased externally, so would not be a club coached trip.

River Reading/Leading

It was felt that members of the club’s personal skills were developing fast thanks to facilities at Lee Valley. However, it is vital that as a club, people have appropriate River Reading/Leading skills in order to assist other club members on trips.

This was proposed as a coached trip, so a request will be made to the committee. Mark Rowe to discuss with Aisling Ni Chuinn who may be interested in being lead coach/co-ordinator.

Personal safety on White Water/Personal skills on Grade 3-4.

Attempts to run safety sessions during club trips have never really taken off, whilst purchased courses have been highly regarded.

Proposed weekend to incorporate one day safety Course (usually run on River T) with personal skills on day 2. No lead coach/co-ordinator identified.

This was proposed as a partially coached trip, so a request will be made to the committee. (proposal was that coaches had one day for personal paddling, so application for expenses should reflect this).

First Aid.

Proposed to approach external provider for one day first aid course.

Reminder re Training Subsidy:

Active Members can approach the committee directly for subsidies for external courses. This subsidy is initially for up to 40%, but an application can be made for an additional subsidy. Details on the RCC website.
