Purchasing and Receiving Feedstuff/Bedding
Purchased feed is ordered using a Feed Order Record which clearly specifies requirements, including in-feed medications, and which silo the feed is to be delivered. Samples must be kept for six (6) months. / Feed Record or Feed Order Record/CVDs
Delivery dockets and the feed are checked at delivery, or as soon as possible, to ensure the correct feed has been delivered to the correct silo. / Delivery dockets/CVDs
All feed and feed ingredients/bedding purchased must be accompanied by a Commodity Vendor Declaration (CVD), which includes information on the WHP/ESI status. / CVD for Grain/CVD for Bedding
Feed silos are clearly identified to prevent incorrect feed being delivered into silos. / Piggery Plan
Rejected feed is removed. Dockets are retained and filed for a minimum period of three (3) years. / Farm Records
Storage
Before each delivery, silos and storage facilities are checked and, if necessary, cleaned, dried and maintained in preparation to receive feedstuffs. / Maintenance Records/Diary
Stored grains, additives and mixed feeds are checked regularly for contaminants. / Checklist/Diary/Farm Records
Stored grains, mixed feeds and feed additives, are checked regularly for signs of insect or rodent infestation and cat faeces. Pest control is carried-out if vermin are detected and recorded in the Rodent/Pest Control Record. / Rodent/Pest Control Record
Feed Quality
Feed is checked on arrival to ensure that it meets quality specifications. / Checklist/Diary/Farm Records
All feeds are inspected on delivery for contaminants such as trash, insects, and hardware. / Feed Samples/Checklist/ Diary/Farm Records
Check for musty or offensive odours indicating feed has been treated or has been wet. / Checklist/Diary/Farm Records
Feed is kept free from animal derived products, unless these have been treated and processed according to approved methods. / Feed Record or Feed Order Record
Pigs are never fed swill. / Checklist/Diary/Farm Records
Water Quality
Water quality tests are taken if quality appears to decline and/or consumption declines / Water Quality Tests
Surface water used for pigs to drink is tested and, if necessary, chlorinated and/or tested to reduce risk of microbial contamination. / Water Quality Tests
Water reticulation lines are buried or hidden, where possible, to control water temperature. / Piggery Plan
Feed Delivery On-Farm
Pens/paddocks are clearly identified. / Piggery Plan
Feed rations are clearly assigned to the pen/paddock and pigs by feed type, or ration, identification. / Piggery Plan
Pigs or groups of pigs that receive different types of feed are identified. Details of pigs receiving medicated feed are recorded on the Medication and Chemical Treatment Record. / Medical and Chemical Treatment Record
Silos from where feed is taken are identified to ensure the right feed is being delivered to the pigs. / Feed Records/Diary
A record is kept of all feed mixed and fed. / Feed Records/Diary
A sample of each feed mix is kept for six months. Samples must be stored so that the quality of the sample is not affected. / Feed Records/Diary
Any pigs mistakenly fed medicated feed are identified and retained for the required WHP/ESI before being sent for slaughter. / Medication and Chemical Treatment Record/Pre-sale Check
On-Farm Grown Grain And Feedstuff
No pesticides or chemicals are used in the production of grain grown on-farm, or where pesticides or chemicals are used, a spray diary is completed and the appropriate WHP/ ESI records are kept and followed. / Crop Record/Diary
Home Mixed Feeds Equipment
Plant and equipment is maintained in clean, safe working order.
Equipment guards are used on plant and equipment.
Mixers are cleaned or flushed using clean grain between rations that use medicated or treated feed. / Maintenance Record/Diary
All feed stuffs are weighed or measured by weight or quantity, prior to adding them to a feed mix.
Grains are milled using appropriate screens to manage particle size.
Feed additives are added according to prescribed rations and mixed thoroughly to ensure even distribution in the final feed.
Suppressants are added to minimise dust.
A mixing rotation is used to avoid feed/equipment contamination. Medicated mixes are followed by clean rations for non-sale pigs, or pigs that will be sold well outside a WHP/ESI to avoid contamination.
Equipment, such as barrows or carts, are cleaned thoroughly after feeding medicated feeds.
Any spillage of medicated feed in pig thoroughfares is cleaned immediately. / Feed Record/Diary
Contingency Plans/Owner/Manager/Staff/Power Failure
For automated feed and water systems experiencing an extended power failure:
Pigs are never left without feed and water for longer than six hours, and if the ambient temperature is over 30°C, water should be provided within six (6) hours
Water is carted from tank to pigs and provided in troughs or other containers
Feed is carted from silos to sheds and feeders are filled using buckets
Care is taken to ensure all pigs receive the correct feed, and that medicated feed is not unintentionally fed to pigs close to being slaughtered. / Feed Record/Diary
Delay in Feed Delivery
If delay in feed delivery results in feed shortage for more than 12 hours, pigs may be provided with non-medicated feed intended for other classes of pigs, until feed arrives. / Feed Record/Diary
Unsatisfactory Feed Quality
Poor quality feed is not fed to pigs. The feed mill/supplier is contacted as soon as possible to replace feed of unsatisfactory quality. / Feed Tests/Feed Record/Diary/CVD
