Program Policies for Students

To be eligible for participation in RLC Programs, candidates will:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Demonstrate a desire to learn.
- Have the potential to improve their English/literacy skills in RLC program.
- Demonstrate behavior appropriate to learning. Reasons for exclusion:
- insensitivity or disrespect toward others
- use of offensive language
- disruptively loud behavior
- possession of a weapon or threatening behavior
- disregard for personal hygiene
- under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs
- harassment (any behavior perceived as offensive, after being asked to stop)
- Have no record of conviction for any crime of violence, unless recommended for services by Probation and Parole.
- Be willing to commit to at least two hours of instructional time per week, make and keep appointments independently, arrive at tutoring sessions on time and notify RLC or the tutor in advance (at least one hour for an excused absence) of planned absence or expectations to be late. Three unexcused absences in a six month period may deem the student ineligible for services. Re-entry into program is limited to three times.
- Agree to meet at RLC or an authorized tutoring site. Home tutoring is not permitted.
- Be able to and agree to get to the designated tutoring site without assistance from the program or tutor. Transportation of students by volunteers or staff is prohibited.
- Agree to purchase necessary books and materials. A fund is available for those students who cannot afford to do so.
- Show measurable progress as compared to initial reading and language inventory and/or show progress meeting stated goals.
If the student (or prospective student) is unwilling or cannot meet the provisions stated above, RLC will attempt to refer the individual to an appropriate agency.
If a student is accepted into RLC program on an agency referral basis, the referring agency may be asked to share relevant information regarding education, medical history and other pertinent data that the student agrees to have released.
The RLC does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, physical appearance, sexual orientation, familial status, or disability.
