Race Day Is Sunday, May 27. Our Friends from Around the Council As Well As Michigan

Race Day is Sunday, May 27. Our friends from around the council as well as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin will be joining us for the weekend beginning Friday May 25. Anyone from the band is invited (and encouraged) to come and camp with us as we host our visitors for the weekend. You can arrive anytime after 5:00 PM on Friday – dinner will be on your own. We will have breakfast on Saturday morning and an evening pitch in meal on Saturday. Day activities on Saturday will be varied.

On race morning (Sunday) you must be at Camp Belzer no later than 4:30 AM! We will be boarding the buses and leaving camp by 5:00 to rendezvous with the other pre-race participants. Belzer will be the only pick up and return point for the race. NO PERSONAL VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL WITH THE BUSES AND TRUCK IN THE ESCORTED CARAVAN. Buses will return to Camp Belzer after the race is over. In the past we have arrived around 5:00 - 5:30 PM.

Cost is $20.00 per person which covers the cost of renting five buses for Sunday as well as the weekend meals. Keith Hartzog, BBBC Treasurer will be available at Camp Belzer on Saturday to collect the funds and issue tickets for you to board the bus on Sunday. If you don’t have a ticket — you don’t get on the bus. Each person will receive a race ticket, box lunch and track souvenir (once we finish marching at the track).

Arrive in uniform as time is short when we get to the track — bring a change of clothes for after the parade around the track.

A permission slip MUST be filled out for ALL participants and turned in PRIOR to boarding the bus. If you are NOT returning with the band we must have a SIGNED statement from your parent/guardian or you will NOT be permitted to leave by yourself. It is preferred that the person who is meeting you meets us in the bus parking area inside Gate 9A (Northwest — Turn 4 area) after we finish performing.

Remember you MUST ALWAYS HAVE A BUDDY WITH YOU WHEN LEAVING THE PARKING AREA OF THE TRACK. NEVER EVER EVER GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT YOUR BUDDY!

Be prepared to do some marching practice at the few rehearsals we have remaining in May — dress accordingly!

If you have questions about 500 Race weekend general activities contact Bill Schofield at 317-542-8057; Bob Wiker at 317-356-9678 for out of town guests; Deb Estes at 317-694-6974 for Band personnel and Suzanne Dinger at 317-823-1710 for pitch-in items on Saturday night.

***IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL THOSE TRAVELING TO CAMP BELZER FROM THE NORTH. – SHAFTER ROAD (THE ROAD CONNECTING SHADELAND / FALL CREEK TO BOY SCOUT ROAD [THE BRIDGE]) IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND IS CLOSED. PLEASE TAKE SHADELAND AVENUE OR I-465 TO THE 56TH STREET EXIT AND GO EAST ON 56TH STREET TO BOY SCOUT ROAD AND THEN NORTH TO THE CAMP.***

We hope to see you for this great annual event – last year we had over 200 participants for the weekend. Come and join us anytime from Friday through clean-up on Monday morning, May 28th. We should be done and checked out by 12:00 noon on Monday.

Paul and a partner have formed a 501(C) [3] non profit corporation, Periko Partners which was established to assist the youth of greater Indiana with the opportunity to experience music.Periko Partners’goal is to ensure that schools and groups like the Scout Band can provide instruments and lessons to ensure that every child that wants to discover their musical abilities has the opportunity to do so.

For further information about Paul’s venture, please contact him at 317-894-6433 or

Paul has offered to “personalize” a webpage for a family to send as a link to family and friends to raise funds for this tour or future tours. The giving online is secure and can be done with credit card or debit card. Funds sent to the band’s general account will be used for tour expenses, those that are forwarded to personal webpage will be deposited into the family personal account of the band. The funds could only be used for band activities as that is the purpose of this service. There is no charge to the band or the individual for setting this up. If you work for a company that offers matching funds, be sure they are aware of your donation to Periko Partners.

The Harvey U. Gill Dixieland Band has a busy summer ahead of them. Final rehearsal will be Sunday, May 20th at 1:00 PM at St. Lawrence Catholic School.

Annual Award Nominations Due

The annual award nominations are due by the June 27 BBBC Board Meeting. The Harvey Gill Award recognizes an outstanding youth member and the F.O. Belzer Award recognizes an outstanding adult member. Applications are available at rehearsals or online.

Chris Estes Finishes Eagle Trail

Congratulations to Christopher (Chris) Esteswho has completed all of his requirements for Scouting’s highest honor – the rank of Eagle Scout. Chris will be sitting for his Eagle Board in the near future and a Court of Honor will follow.

The band has been asked to play prior to the Court of Honor which is being planned for either June 10 or a date in early July at the Indiana War Memorial. A Calling Post message will be sent when plans are finalized and exact times and locations are known.

Alumni Help with London Tour

The BBBC was overwhelmed by the generous support of two of the band’s alumni this spring.

Larry Stevens of Juneau, Alaska stopped by while he was in Indianapolis and presented the band with over 400 British Pounds to be used while the band is in London. The board has made the decision to use this money for the full group when we are in London.

Larry achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 12 and received a Bronze Palm in 1954. In reading our newsletters and recalling his trips with the band, particularly the 1953 and 1957 National Jamborees he wanted to help out. Larry’s generous support has helped the band in the past and his commitment to the success of the band is greatly appreciated.

The Herran Tour Scholarship has again been offered by Ed Herran, who with his children, Erica, Nick and Andrew was active with the band for many years and went on many tours. Ed relocated to the East coast and stays in touch with the band through this newsletter. Remembering all the great experiences they had, Ed offered a $1,000.00 scholarship to be used at the BBBC Board’s discretion to assist a YOUTH member the opportunity to go on tour. The youth member must attend rehearsals on a regular basis, show leadership with other members of the band or their section, and have a willingness to make a commitment to the band for a long period of time. The Board decided that a total of $700.00 would be used for individual scholarships and the remaining $300.00 would be used for the group as a whole while in London. The individual[s] and the amount of the scholarship will be determined by the BBBC and the number of applications received. If you are interested, please complete an application and submit to Bill Schofield; 5423 Mark Lane; Indianapolis, IN 46226. Applications must be in by June 3rd so the BBBC Board can make final determination as to the recipient [s] at the Shakedown.

The BBBC thanks both of these alumni members for their generous contributions. Both have been thanked “initially”, but formal thanks will be sent when the recipients have been identified so they can offer their personal thanks.

London Tour Update

The time is getting near for our departure to London, England for the 2007 Tour. Final arrangements with the airlines and lodging will be made once we have a final number of participants. To date, there are 20 applications on file, and another 8-9 that are “planning to go but have not turned in an application” – PLEASE DO SO IMMEDIATELY.

A Class 3 Physical is required of ALL participants – youth and adult. Passports should be completed – if you have not done so you will need to expedite the application process to ensure you receive it prior to departure.

There is a possibility of leaving late afternoon on Friday July 27th – this would put us in London on Saturday morning. If we leave Saturday, departure would be 7ish AM – meaning arrival at airport around 5ish AM and getting us into London Saturday night.

Contact has been received from Mr. Paul Wong, Director of UK Scout Bands and he is making arrangements for concerts both in and outside of the Jamboree site. He has also offered the use of UK Bands large instruments and percussion items.

Updates will be sent to participants on a regular basis as they are received / made.
