WHAT MATERIALS MUST BE USED TO COLLECT URINE?
A 2500 mL bottle, made of inert plastic, with large opening, hermetic screw cap and containing hydrochloric acid 6N: this kind of bottle can be provided only by the Laboratory/Centro Prelievi.
/ The hydrochloric acid contained into the bottle is irritating; therefore you must handle the bottle with care, keep it on a sure surface, to make sure that it cannot fall to the floor; do not turn it upside down and keep it out of reach of children. It is better not to urinate directly in this bottle: you should urinate in another clean container, then pour the urine immediately from this container into the bottle containing the acid (be careful when doing this operation).If the acid comes into contact with the skin or the eyes, quickly wash them under plenty of fresh water

HOW TO COLLECT THE URINE SAMPLE?
Supposing to start the collection at 7.00 am, collect the urine by following these instructions:
§ The day when you start the urine collection, at 7.00 am urinate and empty your bladder completely: do not collect this urine, throw it away;
§ Save all urine for the next 24 hours in the bottle, including the urine let out at 7.00 am the next morning. It is better not to urinate directly in this bottle: you should urinate in another clean container and pour the urine immediately from this container into the bottle containing the acid (be careful when doing this operation);
§ Keep the bottle on a sure surface, in a cool place and out of the reach of children, don’t expose it to the direct sunlight.
§ When you have finished the urine collection, make sure that the container is closed tightly and bring it to the medical laboratory/Centro Prelievi during the reception hours; remember to return also this sheet, that you have filled in.
N.B. If you have also a medical prescription for measurement of Uric Acid, Urea, Creatinina, Clearance of Creatinina, Na, K and free Cortisol at the same time, you can collect all urine in a single bottle containing hydrochloric acid.

DIETto get prepared to HIAA and/or Serotonin measurement in the
24-hour urine collection
To do the test of measurement of HIAA and/or Serotonin in the 24-hour urine collection, you must follow this special diet during the 24 hours of the urine collection and even in the previous 4 days:
· do not eat bananas, dried fruit, tomatoes, aubergines, pineapple, plums, grapefruits, avocado, chocolate (that is to say food rich in tryptophan);
· do not take any cough syrup, medicines with salicil acid, medicines with salicylic acid or anti-inflammatory drugs (the doctor that orders you to do the urinal test must check your usual medicines and give you instructions about them, especially if they contain serotonin or if they can alter the production of serotonin).
