Objectives / By the end of the course, students should be able to:
* Describe data numerically and graphically, including regression and correlation
* Understand probability distributions, including sampling distributions
* Estimate population means and proportions with confidence intervals
* Perform significance tests on population means and proportions
Prerequisite / C- or better in DS 110, MATH 110, or equivalent calculus course.
Homework / Practice exercises located in the text will be recommended to you regularly. Solutions to all odd-numbered exercises are given in the back of the text; solutions to all problems will be posted on iLearn (one Excel file per chapter). Although I will not collect these problems, you should work on them because this is the best way to master concepts and prepare for the exams.We’ll only have time to discuss a small number ofthese problems in class, so visit me if you need help.
Five Excel exercises will be collected, gradedand reviewed in class. These will give you skills in using acomputer to analyze larger data sets in more realistic situations. The course iLearn site has an Excel tutorial that you might want to try soon.
Exams & Grading / All exams will be open book and open notes, with calculators permitted; however, laptop, netbook, other computer, or cell phone may not be used during exams. No make-up exams or assignments will be given. Late/missed assignments and exams will count as a 0.Dates will be announced well in advance in class.
If the class average at the end of the semester is below 75%, a curve will be used to determine final course grades; otherwise, no curve will be used. If you choose to take the course credit/no credit (CR/NC), a grade of C- or better is required to get credit.
