Questions to ask for user testing:

To Test Monitor: Thank you for doing this testing for us. Please follow this script exactly as we have prepared it, asking only the questions that we have listed. Our script reads something like a screenplay where you just ask the questions and take notes based on what the test subject answers. Try and elicit as much information as possible for each question. One of our goals is to see how easily our test chilren grasp the interface without being told about how to use it. Try and let the child do as much controlling as possible, while assisting only if needed. Please mark down under any of the questions if the child gets stuck at any point. Thanks again. We hope everything is clear. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask wither Jason Freevol, David Fuelling, or Christy King.

PHASE I -- Setup

1. You should see a screen on your computer that has a title as a front page. The page should actually be a Macromedia Director movie, in a Netscape window. The title of the game is called “Shakey Caterpillars”.

2. If the game is set up, invite the test subject (our child) to sit down and explain to them that this a video game and that you would like to watch them play through the game one time before you ask them any questions. Once they play the game through, they will be asked to play the game one more time, moving slower throught the game the second time around. As they play through the game on the first run, observe any actions they might have such as facial or hand gestures, sounds of joy or dismay, and their general enjoyment of the game. You may assist them if they need help. (Try and see if they are generally bored, looking around the room or if they are encompassed by the game.)

Please write any comments in the following space, then turn to the next page when the child is done.

Feel Free to write on the back if needed

3. Once the child has finished one run through the game, ask him\her to play the game one more time, except do not allow the test subject to click any buttons until you have asked all of your questions for each “phase” below (There is a phase for each screen). If the testor (the child) accidentally clicks to the next segment, you will need to start the game over by clicking the “Reload” button in Netscape.

Let’s get started with the rest of the phases. Please Turn the page.
