QUEENSLAND ASSOCIATION FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED CHILDREN INC.

GOLD COAST BRANCH

The QAGTC Gold Coast Branch organises a range of Saturday afternoon workshops for gifted children throughout the school terms. A parent support group usually runs in conjunction with the workshops, sometimes featuring an invited guest speaker.

The group aims to provide a regular forum where parents can obtain information, support and advice on raising, motivating and advocating for gifted children, and where they can also make friends and contacts within the QAGTC community, specifically on the Gold Coast.

Particularly if you’ve recently discovered that your child has been identified as gifted and you’re wondering what it all means, it can be helpful to compare notes with others who are experiencing the same challenges in supporting their children, in working with the school systems (or perhaps even homeschooling), and in dealing with a young person whose behaviour and academic performance may not always fall within normal expectations. Discussing your child’s education and development with others in a similar position sometimes helps to put things in perspective. And it can be reassuring to meet parents who have been where you are now, but whose gifted kids have actually “turned out ok”.

At our April meetingthe group is pleased to present a

featuring two guest speakers from The Southport School:

Angela Foulds-Cook, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching & Head of Gifted Education, will address the neurobiology of the gifted brain and how to support the gifted child’s brain in the learning process.

Geraldine Townend, Preparatory School Gifted Education teacher, will speak on the gifted child’s sensitivities, how these manifest in the classroom, and ways to work with these traits in a gifted child.

There will also be time for discussion and questions. The seminar will be useful for parents and teachers of children at both the primary and secondary levels. Community members are also welcome to attend. Tea and coffee will be in plentiful supply, as will access to information on resources and contacts.

Parent support group meetings tend to be quite informal. No minutes are taken and discussions remain confidential. To create an environment in which participants feel confident to discuss aspects of parenting, we request that support group meetings be ‘parents only’ – children do not attend ourmeetings.
