Quarterly Independent Reading Assignment

Over the course of the school year, you will be required to read eight books independently, two each quarter. After reading each selected book, you will complete a one-pager, which will be turned into Ms. Mathews on or before the assigned due date. Some class time will be provided for sustained silent reading, though you are expected to read your selection outside of class so that it is finished by the end of the quarter.

What is a one-pager?

  • A one-pager is simply a one page reflection of the book you have read.
  • It is a short assignment that should not take more than 30 minutes if you read the book.

Attached you will find eight one-pagers that will be completed throughout the school year. Each is slightly different and you will have the option of choosing the order in which you complete the reflections, but you may not repeat a prompt, so please plan accordingly.

All of the prompts are also on Ms. Mathews’ website, so you can access an electronic copy if you choose to do so.

Guidelines for choosing books:

  • Choose titles from any genre, fiction or non-fiction.
  • Make age-appropriate choices.
  • The book needs to be at least 150 pages in length.
  • Remember that this is an academic-based assignment, so book selections need to be appropriate.

Book Suggestions from Ms. Mathews:

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green / Harry Potter series by JK Rowling
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak / Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky / Divergent series by Veronica Roth
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher / The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan / Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini
The Uglies series by Scott Westerfield / The Maze Runner series by James Dashner
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wells / The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie / Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins / Matched series by Ally Condie

The Quarterly Independent Reading Assignment is worth 50 points each quarter (25 points for each one-pager).

The due dates for each quarter are as follows:

  • 1st Quarter: Monday, October 28th/Tuesday, October 29th
  • 2nd Quarter: Thursday, January 16th/Friday, January 17th
  • 3rd Quarter: Monday, March 24th/Tuesday, March 25th
  • 4th Quarter: Thursday, June 5th/Friday, June 6th

You are more than welcome to turn in your one-pagers before the given due date.
