QUARTERLY HEALTH AND SAFETY REPORT

SUMMARY

This report covers the services and activities of the Health and Safety Unit for the period October, November and December 2006.

RECOMMENDATIONS

It is recommended that; -

  1. The report be noted.

DETAIL

This report gives the accident, assault and training statistics for the 3rd quarter of 2006. It also gives comparison between this quarter and the same period in 2005.

Health & Safety Training - Appendix 1

Fourty-One training sessions were delivered in this quarter, to a total of 350 delegates. There were Twenty-Seven additional bespoke courses delivered within departments.

Accidents - Appendix 2, Table 1

Accidents reported to the Health & Safety Unit this period were 39, this compares with 38 over the same period last year and with 23 in the previous reporting period.

Physical Assaults - Appendix 2, Table 2

There were 39 Physical assaults reported in this quarter, which compares with 20 reported in the previous reporting period and 42 in the same period in 2005.

Verbal Assaults - Appendix 2, Table 3

There were 43 verbal assaults, which compares with 14 reported in the previous reporting period and 16 in the same period in 2005.

Major Injuries

Fracture of the skull, spine, pelvis and any bone in the arm or leg, but not bones in the hand or foot.

Amputation of a hand or foot: or a finger or toe where the bone or a joint is

completely severed.

Loss of sight in an eye or a penetrating injury, or a chemical or hot metal burn to an eye.

Injury requiring medical treatment or loss of consciousness due to electric shock.

Loss of consciousness due to lack of oxygen.

Decompression sickness

Acute illness or loss of consciousness caused by absorption of infected material.

Any other injury which results in the person being admitted to hospital for more than 24 hours.

Minor Injuries

Any other injury to an employee which results in their absence from work or being unable to do their normal work for more than 3 days (including days which would not normally be working day
