QUALITY AND CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTH CARE
Catalog Description:
53 - Quality and Continuous Quality Improvement in Health Care 1 unit
Evaluate the history and methodology of quality assurance in the health care setting. The continuous quality improvement process, methodologies and tools will be discussed and utilized to understand the relationship to providing high quality health care in an efficient, customer oriented environment. Strongly recommended: Health Information Technology 50 or equivalent. 1 hour.

Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. cite history of quality assurance and quality improvement in health care;
2. cite important Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization standards, Condition of Participation, State and other regulatory requirements related to continuous quality improvement;
3. discuss the use of quality assurance activities/data on peer review and peer review organizations;
4. develop a quality assurance plan inclusive of the 10 steps defined by JCAHO;
5. develop a data collection tool using criteria and computer applications;
6. evaluate quality data and validate based on understanding of data collection, statistical calculation, data presentation options;
7. describe methodologies in quality assurance activities, including critical paths;
8. perform various quality assurance activities and studies;
9. develop solutions for identified quality issues based on resources, knowledge and attitude;
10. calculate statistics based on data collection and graphically report results;
11. use quality assurance techniques to validate coding, DRG, and coding compliance audits;
12. discuss how a computerized patient record utilizing decision support and alerts will impact quality assurance in healthcare;
13. demonstrate continuous quality improvement through use of applicable tools - brainstorming, survey, fishbone, run charts, pareto charts, scatter diagrams, etc;
14. develop a mission statement;
15. facilitate a team for continuous quality improvement activities;
16. identify a process, customer, products, and issues to improve quality.
