Qualifications for Assessors

(Previously known as D32/D33/A1)

There are 4 qualifications aimed at assessors based upon national occupational standards.

Each qualification has one or more units in common.

Extract from: Assessing and Assuring the Quality of Assessment, LLUK, 2010

Unit 1 - Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

The aim of this unit is to assess the Trainee Assessor’s knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices that underpin assessment. It is particularly useful for those people who do not currently have any candidates to assess. To achieve this qualification, you need to complete an assignment and undertake professional discussion with your assessor.

Unit 2 - Assessing Competence in the Work Environment

This qualification is for people who assessoccupational competence in a work environment. You will complete Unit 1 (as outlined in the first section above).

To achieve this unit you will need 2 learners to work with. You will use a variety of assessment methods including observation, review of product evidence and oral questioning to assess relevant criteria. You need to work with a mentor at your centre who will provide you with information relating to the qualification/standards being assessed, the assessment records you need to complete and the legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and codes of practices you need to follow.

Your mentor should observe you assessing and provide support and guidance. Your assessment decisions need to be countersigned by a qualified assessor (who could also be your mentor). You will also need to work with an internal quality assurer (or internal verifier) who will benchmark your performance against that of other assessors to evaluate the effectiveness of your assessment practices. You will also need to follow standardisation procedures. You will need to provide evidence that you have carried out at least 2 assessments of 2 learners’ occupational competence (a minimum of 4 assessments in total).

Unit 3 - Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement

The aim of this unit is to assess the Trainee Assessors’ performance in assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the workplace – for example workshops, classrooms and other training environments. You will complete Unit 1 (as outlined in the first section).

To achieve this unit you need a minimum of 2 learners to work with to assess their skills, knowledge and understanding. You will use a variety of assessment methods including simulation, skills tests, oral and written questions, assignments, projects, case studies. Learners could be working towards qualifications such as VRQs and functional skills.

You need to work with a mentor at your centre who will provide you with information relating to the qualification being assessed, how the assessments are prepared and managed in the classroom or simulated environment. Your mentor will provide you with relevant documentation relating to the planning and assessment and the legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and codes of practices you need to follow. Your mentor should observe your practices and provide feedback in relation to your performance.

You will need to provide evidence that you have carried out at least 2 assessments of 2 learners’ skills, knowledge and understanding (a minimum of 4 assessments in total). Evidence for this qualification includes an observation by your assessor of you undertaking assessment in the classroom or simulated environment with one of your learners.
