Overview

IMI Awards offers a selection of vocational qualifications for vehicle body repair and paint (refinishing) at different levels (from Entry 3 to Level 3)to suit individual needs.

This Level 1 vocational qualification provides individuals with an introduction to the specialist knowledge and skills required by a painttechnician. It also enables them to gain an understanding of the vehicle refinishing working environment.

Learners taking this qualification must be must be 16 years or over. There are no other formal entry requirements for this qualification. However selection for entry will take into account each applicant's existing academic/vocational qualifications, experience, and interest in working in vehicle refinishing.

(Note: This qualification does not form part of an apprenticeship.)

Who is the qualification for?

This qualification is for learners who enjoy a practical work environment andare interested in vehicle refinishingand the role of the paint technician. It will provide them with the opportunity to develop their knowledge at the level suiting their ability at entry.

Individuals taking this qualification may be those wishing to learnabout vehicle refinishing for the first time, those returning to learning or those who have never achieved a qualification before.

The qualification has been designed to be practical, engaging and motivating to support learners in gaining the core knowledge required by vehicle refinishing employers. Once they have achieved this qualification, they can progress to further training and education, including an apprenticeship, or job role in vehicle refinishing.

What does this qualification cover?

100% of the vocational learning within this qualification relates to the vehicle refinishing sector.

Learners will cover the following essential skills that are required by many job roles in the retail motor industry:

  • health and safety practices in vehicle maintenance
  • good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • and materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices.

Learnerswill develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of topic areas (seeexamples below):

  • introduction to the retail automotive maintenance and repair industry
  • basic vehicle preparation
  • vehicle refinishing materials
  • vehicle paint application and minor defect rectification
  • vehicle body repair practices and procedures
  • vehicle body repair materials
  • removing and fitting non-permanently fixed motor vehicle body panels
  • removing and fitting trim components
  • vehicle electrical foundation skills
  • and introduction to low carbon technologies in the automotive industry.

Learners also have the option to achieve some Level 2 units, which will support their progression to a Level 2 qualification in vehicle refinishing (paint).

Learners will gain these skills in a mainly workshop based environment by carrying out tasks, which their assessors will observe. Learners will collect evidence of their skills and knowledge in a ‘portfolio of evidence’. In several topic areas learners will also be required to pass multiple choice questions, set by IMI Awards, to prove their knowledge and understanding. This qualification should also encourage the learner to appreciate the value of literacy and numeracy skills in the world of work.

What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification will support a learner’s progress to a Level 2 qualification, e.g. IMIAL Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Accident Repair Paint Principles (500/9821/4). It can also help their progress to an apprenticeship, such as the Institute of the Motor Industry Sector Skills Council (IMI SSC) Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Vehicle Body and Paintat Level 2, or to employment in vehicle refinishing as a traineepaint technician.

IMI Awards Approved Training Providers will recognise this qualification as entry to the IMIAL Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Accident Repair Body Principles (500/9689/8) in addition to their own selection criteria.
