PUSH TO HELPABORIGINAL PEOPLEACCESS AGED CARE SERVICES
The peak body for elder’s rights in Western Australia has renewed its commitment to improving outcomes for elderly Aboriginal Australians as it launches fresh resources to promote culturally specific aged care services.
A new brochure for community members, and a poster for workplaces aim to highlight the necessity for a renewed focus on the needs of ageing Aboriginal Australians.
Tiffany Ugle, Aboriginal Liaison Officer at Advocare, said it is important that culturally appropriate resources are made available to assist the Aboriginal population.
“It is essential that Aboriginal people do not feel invisible or unnoticed in the community,” said Ms Ugle.
“If we are to ensure that our Aboriginal population are to stay strong, healthy and safe as they age, we must empower our elderly population and be responsive to their individual needs” she said.
Advocare’s Aboriginal Advocacy Program is explicitly designed to provide information for seniors on their rights, choices, entitlements and responsibilities in regards to their aged care options, and help in relation to elder abuse.
The program can work with people aged 50 and over, their families, carers and service providers, and offers a free and confidential service.
Community members and organisations can order the resources or contact the program and speak to the Aboriginal Liaison Officer on 9479 7566 or email .
