Located in the heart of historic Chichester on the south coast, Pallant House Gallery is a unique combination of a Grade One Listed Queen-Anne townhouse and an award-winning contemporary extension, housing one of the most significant collections of Modern British art in the country. Widely acclaimed for its innovative temporary exhibitions and pioneering Learning and Community programme which has inclusion at its heart, it has won numerous awards and accolades including the Gulbenkian Prize and the Charity Award.

The Gallery employs 29 staff (FTE) who work closely with 200 highly committed volunteers and a vibrant Friends organisation numbering over 4,000 members. The Gallery receives an average of 60,000 visitors a year and over 8,000 people participate in the Learning and Community programme.

Purpose and key objectives

The Marketing Manager will support the Head of Communications to position Pallant House Gallery as a world-class, dynamic and inclusive cultural organisation and to increase footfall, diversify the Gallery’s audience and build brand loyalty throughhigh profile marketing campaignsthat promote the exhibitions, learning and community programme and commercial activities. You will work in close partnership with other members of the Communications team to move towards an increasingly targeted and responsive approach to marketing strategy, based on a sound knowledge of the Gallery’s audience structure and behaviour.

Key responsibilities

Marketing

  • Develop and implement creative marketing initiatives, including promotions, partnershipsand advertising campaignsas part of integrated communications campaigns to promote the Gallery’s exhibitions
  • Develop and implement a marketing strategy to grow audiences for the Gallery’s events, with a particular focus on the art course programme
  • Develop and implement a marketing strategy for the Gallery’s Friends membership scheme, with a focus on recruitment and retention
  • Contribute to the production and distribution of the Gallery’s print marketing materials, proposing and delivering new print marketing solutions where relevant
  • Support the Development team on new fundraising initiatives that require marketing support
  • Develop processes to monitor return on investment of marketing campaigns
  • Work withlocal cultural partners and tourism bodies on developing joint marketing initiatives thatpromote Chichester as a key arts destination in the south

Audience Development

  • Contribute to a growing understanding of the Gallery’s audience structure by analyzing and reporting on captured data
  • Ensure an integrated approach to audience research and analysis across the Gallery
  • Manage volunteers to carry out visitor exit surveys and process the data obtained
  • Support the Head of Communications to implement a sound CRM strategy that enables targeted communications with the Gallery’s audiences
  • Ensure opportunities for data capture are maximized and exploited
  • Work with the Head of Communications to plan and implement an audience segmentation proposition that identifies further potential audiences for the Gallery

Digital and website

  • To support the Head of Communications in the development of the new Pallant House Gallery website
  • To oversee the daily management of the Gallery’s website, ensuring it is up to date and fit for purpose
  • To provide analytical reports on online and social activity to help build insights of the Gallery’s digital audience, informing the digital strategy and website development
  • To work with the Communications Officer on planning and delivering the digital strategy, increasing participation through social media activity, exploring opportunities in digital advertising, maximizing opportunities through e-communications and delivering a strong digital profile for the Gallery

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Demonstrable marketing experience, preferably in the arts, culture, charity or tourism sectors
  • Experience of delivering marketing campaigns with sales and audience development objectives in mind
  • Ability to apply analytical thinking with experience in working with audience data
  • The ability to think creatively, with the confidence to bring creative ideas to the table
  • Excellent copywriting skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills including the ability to work on multiple and complex projects simultaneously
  • Good team-working skills as well as the ability to work under own initiative
  • A strong attention to detail
  • An energetic approach with the ability be adaptable and stay calm under pressure

Desirable:

  • Experience of effectively managing a team
  • An existing marketing qualification or similar
  • An eye for design and experience with design tools such as Photoshop
