Using PubMed with EndNote

Option 1: Save results and import
Recommended for best searching capabilities


1. Search in PubMed. Mark citations you want to keep by checking the box next to the title of the article. Click on the Send to: link at the top of the results page, then click the radio button next to Clipboard. Now you will have the option to click the Add to Clipboard button.


2. Go to your clipboard by clicking on the Clipboard icon. This icon appears only after you have sent items to the Clipboard and is located next to the Send to link.


3. Mark the citations in your clipboard list that you want to send to EndNote by checking the box next to the title of the article. Click on the Send to: link, and then click the radio button next to File. Change the format drop-down menu to MEDLINE. Click Create File.

4. A pop-up window will appear asking if you want to open or save the file. Choose save. It will save as a text file (.txt) to your computer.
5. Go into the Endnote program and open the library where you want to save these citations.
6. Go to the File menu and choose ImportImport File.
7. Click on Choose File and find the .txt file you saved.
8. Choose import option PubMed NLM. You may have to search for it under Other Filters if it does not already appear in your list.
9. Click on Import.
Option 2: Connect to PubMed when in Endnote

Recommended for retrieving the citation for a known item

  1. In EndNote, choose the Online Search option by clicking on the + next to Online Search in the My Library Groups pane and choosing more…, or going to the Tools menu and choosing Online Search, or use the Online Search icon .
  2. You will be asked to choose a connection file. Find and choose the one for the catalog/database you are using: PubMed (NLM). Click on Choose.
  1. A search box will appear near the bottom of your EndNote window in the preview pane. Do your search by author, title, keywords, etc.
  2. A window will appear showing how many search results were found. Select the number you want retrieved.
  3. Your search results will appear in your Endnote Library and be listed in a group under Online Search on the left hand side of your library's page. You will have to go through these and delete ones you don't want to keep.
