2. The Fifth Annual Gulf Comparative Education Society Symposium, Call for Proposals
Locating the National in the International: Comparative Perspectives on Language, Identity, Policy, and Practice
Dubai Men's College, Higher Colleges of Technology
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
April 9 - 10, 2014
The Gulf Comparative Education Society (GCES) is a not-for-profit society formed in 2008 to enable professional educational discourse on the Gulf region from a comparative stance.
The theme of the fifth annual symposium is “Locating the National in the International: Comparative Perspectives on Language, Identity, Policy, and Practice.” This year’s symposium will examine issues relating to language and cultural heritage in the context of the creation of inclusive and outward looking educational spaces. As countries in the region seek simultaneously to preserve traditions and culture while embracing modernity, challenges inevitably arise, particularly in the education sector. In bringing together academics, policymakers, and educators to compare educational policies and practices across the region, the symposium aims to explore some of the issues surrounding language, identity, and education in the GCC.
The GCES invites the submission of paper abstracts focusing on various aspects of comparative and international education relating to the symposium theme, as well as research examining education in the Gulf more generally for presentation at the 2014 symposium. The GCES also encourages those working in Ministries of Education, or related entities, to submit papers that focus on the needs and challenges which they currently face and the types of research they would like to see emerging from universities and think tanks in the region. For students, teachers, and research-in-progress, there is the option to submit a poster presentation instead of a paper abstract.
Submission Details
Abstracts and poster proposals should be submitted online at:
Please note that only students, teachers, and those submitting research-in-progress are eligible to present posters (submissions other than those from students, teachers, or research-in-progress will not be considered).

5. International Video Conference, Call for Participants
I am a professor in teacher education in Alabama, USA and a long-time participant/member of CIES. I have used international video conferences for the past 5 years for educational exchanges that educate pre-service teachers, teacher education professors, and elementary/secondary teachers about various topics of mutual interest to participants.
I am currently trying to set up a video conference between undergraduate teacher education candidates and their professors from my university (University of South Alabama, USA) and teachers who have been through a teacher preparation program and/or teacher educators from other countries. We would like to hear about what methods you use to prepare teachers, and about methods you use to teach students in elementary and secondary schools. We will be happy to tell you about whatever topic (in teaching/teacher education) you would like to know about from our location. If any CIES member is interested, please contact me at either or .
