Instructions for Graduate Students:
1. The Department will award several graduate student scholarships and awards. Please review the list of awards on the following pages to determine which is most appropriate for you. Each award requires that you submit the appropriate essays (see below for specifics)and a CV. The thesis, dissertation, and teaching fellow awards also require one letter of recommendation.
2. With one exception, applications are due in Dr. Barnett’s mailbox (3rd floor Terrill Hall) by 5 p.m. on February 20, 2018.The exception is the TF award, which is due January 15th, 2018. Early submission is encouraged.
3. A SEPARATE application is required for EACH award you are applying for.The essay must be tailored specifically to the award you are applying for. Place all materials in separate manila envelopes. For example, if you are applying for 2 awards, then you will turn in 2 separate manila envelopes.
4. We encourage all students to apply for the dissertation, thesis, and scholarly publication award, if eligible. Beyond these, however, you may only apply to two additional awards.
5. Please include a separate “application cover page” (see last page for a copy of this cover page) for each award to which you are applying.
PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT GRADUATE AWARDS
1. Charlotte Friedersdorff-Boyd Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Graduate Student. Each year the Psychology department recognizes a graduate student who has demonstrated superior academic achievement and dedication to the department and profession of psychology. Selection considers a broad array of professional activities, including research, teaching, and service.
To be eligible for this award, you must meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of the award, maintain full time enrollment at the University (unless you have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in your degree program), andbe enrolled as a full-time student in the Department of Psychology's Doctoral program at the UNT.
Requirements: Please provide a statement (750 words max)describing your professional activities, including research, teaching, and service. Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
2. Bonney Honor Student in PsychologyAward. The Bonney award is given to recognize a graduate student who has demonstrated strong academic performance and a special commitment to community service through volunteerism and advocacy. To be eligible for the award, you must be a current graduate student in the Department of Psychology.
Requirements: Please provide a statement (750 words max)confirming your strong academic performance and highlighting your commitment to community service through volunteerism and advocacy. Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
3. Ladenberger Honor Student in PsychologyAward. The Ladenberger award is given to recognize a graduate student who has demonstrated strong academic performance and outstanding service to the department and/or university. To be eligible, you must be a current graduate student in the Department of Psychology.
Requirements: Please provide a statement (750 words max)confirming your strong academic performance and highlighting your outstanding service to the department and/or university. Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
4. PsychologyTeaching Fellow Award. [EARLY DEADLINE FOR THIS AWARD ONLY IS JAN 15]. The Psychology Department is given to recognize outstanding graduate TFs. The department will also nominate those receiving the awardto be considered for one of four university TF awards, which are presented at Honors Day Convocation every year and includes $500 in recognition of superior achievement in teaching. Graduate TFs who meet the following criteria are encouraged to submit materials to be considered: been a TF for 1 full year or longer, have completed 18 semester hours or more of classes, have a 3.5 GPA or higher with no Cs, currently enrolled in at least 6 hours.
Requirements: Please provide a teaching philosophy statement (750 words max), a list of courses taught with a precise description of course and place in curriculum, quantitative and qualitative teaching evaluations (include student ratings, as well as written student evaluations). Also provide a CV, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who can speak to your teaching, and an application cover page (see below).
5. Anna Wright Memorial Scholarship. This award is intended to provide financial support to a Clinical Psychology doctoral student at UNT who demonstrates strong academic performance. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in full-time coursework, including practicum at the UNT Psychology Clinic.
Requirements: Please provide a statement (750 words max) describing accomplishments in the clinical psychology program while at UNT. Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
6. Frank Collins Memorial Scholarship.This award recognizes a student preparing for aresearch career, preferably in academia. To be eligible, the student must be enrolled in good standing in one of the APA accredited programs. (Clinical, Clinical Health, Counseling). This distinction is not necessarily awarded annually; there must be strong evidence of a research career trajectory.
Requirements: Please provide acareer/research goals statement (750-1000 words) as well as a summary of your thesis/ dissertation project (500 words max). Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
7. Ernest H. Harrell Memorial Scholarship. This award recognizes a student preparing for a research career, with a specific interest in the general area(s) of physiological, health, or neuropsychology stress. To be eligible, the student must be an advanced graduate student in at least their 3rd year of training, have at least one publication or presentation at a national conference, have research interests in the areas described above, and show promise for a research/academic career.
Requirements: Please provide a career/research goals statement (750 words max) as well as a copy of your publication/presentation. Also, provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
8. Outstanding Dissertation Award. This award wasestablished to recognize outstanding research accomplishments by graduate students before completion of their degree.
Requirements: Your dissertation must be defended by the time of your application to be eligible for this award. You must be nominated by your faculty advisor for this award. Please provide a letter of reference from your faculty advisor, which also indicates that they are nominating you for this award. Provide a 500 word summary of your dissertation and the impact of the research. Provide an electronic copyof your completed dissertation to Dr. Barnett. Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
9. Outstanding Thesis Award. This award wasestablished to recognize outstanding research accomplishments by graduate students before completion of their degree.
Requirements: Your thesis must be defended by the time of your application to be eligible for this award. You must be nominated by your faculty advisor for this award. Please provide a letter of reference from your faculty advisor, which also indicates that they are nominating you for this award. Provide a 500 word summary of your thesis and the impact of the research. Provide an electronic copy of your completed thesis to Dr. Barnett. Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
10. Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award. This award was established to recognize and encourage scientific and scholarly publications by graduate students before completion of their degree. You must be a first author of a published or accepted for publication manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal for this award. The article must have been published or accepted for publication in the previous calendar year (i.e., published or accepted between 1/1/16and 12/31/16).
Requirements: Provide a copy of the actual manuscript, as well as the impact factor of the journal in which it was published. If the manuscript is in press but not yet published, provide a copy of the accepted draft and a letter from the editor indicating its acceptance. Also provide a CV and an application cover page (see below).
