TEXTBOOK

Myers, D. (2003). Psychology (7th Ed) Worth publishing.

We will use roughly half of the book (Chapters 1-9), the other half will be used in PSYC 1107 (a.k.a., 1106, The Sequel).

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is a basic introduction to the science of psychology. You will come away from the class with a basic background in psychology, including the history of psychology and its philosophical basis, learning, memory and cognition (among other things). While most people have an idea of what psychology is from television and the media (i.e., tell me about your childhood...) there is quite a bit more to it than that.

EVALUATION

Tests: (Test 1 = 27 %, Test 2 = 33 %)

There will be two term tests in this course. They will consist of multiple choice questions. The dates are listed below

Final Exam:(40 %)

This will take place in the June exam period, and will cover the entire course. The format will be similar to the term tests, only bigger!

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

The University takes a very serious view of such offences as plagiarism, cheating, and impersonation. Penalties for dealing with such offences will be strictly enforced.

The following web site contains a complete policy statement on academic dishonesty and attendance. Students are encouraged to read this policy for further clarification of theses issues:

ATTENDANCE POLICY

The general regulations of the university require punctual and regular attendance at the various academic exercises. If there are extenuating circumstances related to an absence, the instructor should be notified. Absences in excess of 20% may jeopardize receipt of credit for the course.

ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR THIS COURSE

While I will not take attendance, I would strongly suggest you come to class, see, the thing is, I will cover stuff in the lectures that is NOT in the book….

MISSED TESTS

Please contact me ASAP so we can set something up. An acceptable excuse (e.g., illness) will likely result in a make up test. Workload is NOT an acceptable excuse (i.e., “But I have three papers due and a test next week.” My response to this is “Welcome to University!”)
