Psychological Side Effects of Sports Injuries

Mental HealthPosters

The study worked to determine if athletes suffered from psychological side effects as a result of their sports related injury, such as a drop in self-esteem, confidence, or developing a fear of re-injury. Do athletes feel they received adequate support from their coach during their injury, and could this play a factor in recovery? Another main focus is if these injured athletes could benefit from a support group run by an occupational therapist to get them through these psychological issues faced by the injury.

The goal of this study is to determine if there are significant psychological side effects that student athletes face after suffering from a sports related injury. In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in sports, and there are more than 3.5 million injuries each year (Stanford Children’s Health 2015). This could further open up a new setting of practice for occupational therapists. Through a survey method, a sample of student athletes were able to answer questions about their self-esteem, confidence levels, coaching support, teammate support, and overall effect their injury had on them. Data was analyzed to determine if there was statistical significance to the psychological side effects that these athletes went through.

Can sports related injuries cause psychological side-effects that affect an athlete’s overall well-being, such as drop in self-esteem? An online survey distributed to all athletes on a university’s campus is used to determine what side effects are significant to injuries.

Surfing and Veterans with PTSD

Mental HealthPosters

1) Justify integrating the nontraditional but ultimately client-centered therapeutic use of surfing in decreasing PTSD symptoms in veterans.
2) Describe how the surfing culture has many of the same characteristics as military culture such as attention to physicality, close relationships, and engagement in an unpredictable environment.
3) Describe how the community-based, highly intensive, sports-oriented activity of surfing may show promise within occupational therapy practice for veterans living with PTSD and is entitled to further research.

The field of mental health is growing within the veteran population. Mental health illnesses such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are among the top reported illnesses in the veteran population. There are a variety of treatments for PTSD such as medication, individual therapy, and group therapy. Traditional therapeutic interventions include cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure therapy, and group-based exposure therapy. New therapeutic techniques for mental health disorders are constantly being developed. One innovative and nontraditional technique that is emerging within occupational therapy practice is the therapeutic use of surfing and ocean therapy. The purpose of this evidence-based project was to compare the structure, techniques, and outcomes of traditional therapeutic interventions in reducing PTSD symptom severity in veterans to the structure, techniques, and outcomes of ocean therapy and surfing. This evidence-based project examined the research reported from 14 articles. Ten of the 14 research articles focused on traditional interventions, and four articles focused on ocean therapy, nature-based therapies, and surfing as a mental health intervention. The results compiled in this study yielded three main themes present in both traditional therapeutic interventions and the activity of surfing as an intervention when treating PTSD: (a) the establishment of new, meaningful relationships, (b) the beneficial use of storytelling, and (c) a redirection from negative emotions, thoughts, and stigmas of a traumatic event. The results from both traditional interventions and surfing interventions demonstrated a decrease in PTSD and depression symptoms.

This poster explores the comparison between techniques and outcomes of traditional interventions to surfing interventions in reducing PTSD symptoms in veterans. Further research is needed to solidify the effects of surfing therapy as a continuation of therapeutic technique. [40 words]
