PSUK WFRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016

The 2016 PSUK Wrestling Championships were held in Liverpool on 19th November, hosted by Merseyside Police.
There was an excellent total of 48 entries from 11 forces for the submission competition, and 20 entries from 10 forces for the freestyle competition. Sadly a few of the regular competitors were available this time, but on the other hand it was great to see first time entries from Devon & Cornwall, Hampshire, and Leicestershire. The number of forces represented is continuing to grow, and it was great to see the interest in freestyle wrestling continuing to revive.
The high number of entries meant that we had a long day of competition. We were honoured to be joined by David Faulkner, a legend in BJJ, Wrestling, Kickboxing and MMA/UFC. He refereed all the submission matches, and his experience and expertise were much appreciated by the wrestlers. David later commented that he was extremely impressed by the high level of skill, and the professional and courteous attitudes that were shown throughout the day. I know a number of first time entrants were nervous of what the competition would entail, but our emphasis is on safe and friendly competition - and we were certainly able to provide that for them. There was a lot of good feedback at the end of the day from the wrestlers. Many thanks to David, and to Jon Owens (Met) the freestyle referee for making the competition so enjoyable.
Many thanks also to Trish van Rooyen (Cheshire) for officiating. Ian Wiggett was pairing master, and the person to blame for the late finish! Thanks once again to Darren Pratt and Andy Long from Merseyside Police for coming forward to host the competition and putting the arrangements in place.
