REPORT OF ASSISTANCE TO THE VICTIMS OF WAR IN BUKAVU DIOCESE

  1. Introduction

Emergency Assistance to people displaced in North Kivu province, offering them basic food and supplies with a moral and spiritual comfort by visits, prayer and Gospel preaching.

Bukavu Diocese, has organized series of visits in Kanyaruchinya camp (8km from Goma town) where are displaced about 150 000 people who flew from the ravages of the rebels of M23 in Rutshuru and Masisi areas. The team was composed of Mme Veneranda NTOTA BAHATI Diocesan MU President, Mrs NGALYA KIMBILINGA MU Member, Ven KARIBUSHI Archdeacon of Goma, Ven SAMVURA Archdeacon of Masisi , Rev Jean Paul, Youth Worker, and Rev Nestor BUCHE curate of Munigi.

Currently, the rebel’s movement is fighting as it occupies a large part of the province, they are harming the habitants by taxes collecting and attacks against targeted people to loot, to rape and to kill them at night. The same situation is observed in Goma and Bukavu towns. Few days ago, Dr Denis MUKWEGE in charge of raped women at Panzi hospital of Bukavu has been attacked and his houseboy killed. Also, fighting is reported in Masisi between militias called FDLR/Interahamwe, Nyatura and Raia Mutomboki against FARDC, the loyal army.

Therefore, the number of displaced is increasing in the camp and in the host families. Once the diocese saw the hard condition of people, the most vulnerable are the orphan children, the mothers who still feeding babies and the old widows. We have registered a little number of 200 families composed of 900 people to benefit the assistance so that we can be able to help some of them with the money received from MSH for this purpose. This report relates about the kind of assistance distributed, the encountered difficulties and how the money has been spent. Also, some photographs with stories will be shown.

  1. Encountered difficulties

-Increasing of food’s price: This situation is a consequence of the insecurity in North Kivu Province. Most of people are displaced and can’t run their activities such agriculture, farming,… So, it was very important to give food to them.

- A large number of displaced people in need of food and non -food. We gave food to a limited number according the amount received.

- Insecurity in the camp: While the assistance was being distributed, a bandit supposed to belong to be from M23 came with guns trying to trouble the atmosphere in order to short the team in distribution and loot the food. He was immediately killed by the militaries sent by the loyal army to assure security during the distribution.

3. Additional information

Insecurity persists in North Kivu and South Kivu. People are living in hardship. They have problem of utensils, warm wearing, water, medicines,… They also need security as they sometimes get troubles from rebels during the day or the night. The Diocese of Bukavu needs prayers from our brothers and sisters, May God strengthen them for a fruitful work among displaced people.
