ED-itors Notes
Hello and welcome to the first Miller of 2017. It has been a long hard winter but I hope you are feeling rested and raring to go for the new season. I am always a big believer of netting in the winter although as a bowler myself, the appeal of bowling in the nets on an artificial surface seeing the ball disappearing over your head from a good length isn’t one I relish. Only come April when you are bowling on a damp wicket does your practice finally comes to fruition.
This year has been different for me in terms of netting as my good wife has decided to be healthier and has made my net night her Slimming world night, therefore I have not made a single appearance to our nets until this week. It was very refreshing to see a lot of new players but also some returners like Robert Barker who I played with as a junior has come out of retirement after some 9 years away! Welcome back Rob!
Away from the practice arena we have had huge changes behind the scenes. Our clubs recently appointedpresident John Summerhill left the committee, after a mere 35 years of labour. Along with John, Matthew Summerhill has made the decision to reignite his passion for the game and left to play closer to home for Oughtibridge WMCC.
Matt was the first captain I played under for SWD as a young 2nd XI in the mid noughties and also being our midweek skipper I got to know him well. You always knew where you were with him, a great man manager who brought me on as a player and made me realise how to play the game tactically as well as with a smile on your face whether you win or lose. Although Matt hasn’t played much in the recent years he has elevated the clubs profile throughout the South Yorkshire League and has helped out on endless projects and initiatives for Millhouses.
I am sure Matt will be a big hit at Oughtibridge, I hope one day he will return to his club where he belongs.
Thanks to both John & Matt for everything you have done.
Another loss to the club is Iain Mallett who has put his bat down and agreed to become an umpire in the South Yorkshire League. Shep is another long standing club stalwart and has scored many thousands of runs for the club. Thankfully Shep remains heavily involved with the club and has recently taken up the role as treasure away from club secretary duties. Good Luck Shep!!!
Enough of the personal tributes!
Finally as the season is upon us I always endeavour to get all the info and stories that are important to Millers across the world so if you have any good stories or you simply want to have your name in lights please contact me
Have a cracking season everyone!!
Yours
Ed-itor Raper
Club News
Outdoor Nets
The club are aiming to have outdoor net sessions on Thursday nights from 6 till dusk. Glen Burden has been hard at work building the outdoor netting enclosure in order to provide a good facility to practice. Hero.

Junior Rota
Yes folks it’s that time of year again, I have been tasked to create the much loved Junior Rota. We need senior players and club members to help out every time we have a junior match whether it is just moving the covers, manning the bar or helping to score & officiate.
I will be contacting you all for a date to help out. I know where most of you live and I understand more than most family commitments and challenges we all face so I will try my best to help you. Please help me and make sure you can make your allotted game otherwise we may miss out on much needed income and above all else we may have to potential that games can’t go ahead. Thanks in advance
Natwest Cricket Force
It’s that time of year again. Each year Natwest sponsor and promote Cricket Force Weekendwhich is an initiative to get Cricket club grounds ready for the new season. The turnout for this event was good and lots of tasks were completed including rebuilding the covers, cleaning out the pavilion and cutting the outfield. Thanks to everyone who attended.

Pavilion Project UPDATE!
As I am sure you are aware Millhouses Works CC are trying to rebuild the old and dilapidated pavilion which has stood in the park for over 60 years. The pavilion has been extended over the years from its original footprint incorporating the showers and umpires room sometime in the mid 80’s. However, time is calling on the old girl and the club is desperate to try and replace her.
In 2016 the club have provisionally been granted funds from Sport England (pending a feasibility by a 3rd party consultant) to rebuild and extend the pavilion help bringing it up to modern day standards however, this funding offer expired after the club could not meet the obligations set out in the terms of the funding.
Millhouses Works CC are now looking at different options and the club have set up another initiative called Pavilion 2020 which is our ambitious new plan to have a new / refurbished pavilion by 2020. We are in dialog with a number of parties and are looking into new funding options and are searching for ideas. If you are reading this and have an idea or want to be part of this exciting project then please speak to one of the committee members.
