JOB PURPOSE:
To promote and enhance the democratic, representational and other membership activities of the Students’ Association embedding a culture of democracy and representation throughout SAUWS.
This will involve developing and coordinating our membership services/staff across the areas of democracy, delivery of activities, support services and the promotion of volunteering.
Conduct research and enquiry into Higher Education, learning, teaching and improve meaningful student engagement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AREAS:
Democracy & Policy – COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENT
  • Act as deputy returning officer supporting the elections - administering the elections process through promotion, nomination, candidate development, polling, count and evaluation, through to the democratic structures of the Student’s Association
  • Coordinate democratic events, and consultations from small consultation forums to large democratic decision making bodies;
  • To ensure the appropriate training and support for all officers and office bearers in SAUWS
  • Provide administrative support working with UWS on governance
  • Maintain the Association’s democratic policy archive and assist student officers in the formation of policy;
  • To assist officers to engage and make connections with the membership especially hard to reach groups of students
  • Working with the CEO, advise and inform that decisions are in line with governing documents, transparent and accessible to stakeholders.
  • Support the response to of internal/external consultations.
Activities and support services – ENGAGEMENT - enabling sports, activities and advice work staff to :
  • To provide leadership and direction for staff and officers delivering activities, across all campuses in the areas of volunteering, support to societies and sports teams, community engagement, actively driving up participation in all these areas.
  • To manage the provision of a quality academic advice work service to students.
  • Oversee a quality welfare provision the offers independent advice whilst working in partnership with the UWS support services
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate records on the distribution of funds to students experiencing hardship to the satisfaction of the UWS.
  • To ensure all necessary activity for the Student’s Association to maintain the Green Impact Award at a Gold Standard
  • Working with the marketing, communications officer develop a calendar of awareness raising welfare campaigns across all media and sites.
Representation – OPPORTUNITIES - enabling the Student Representation Coordinator to:
  • Oversee all activities in relation to the Association’s course representative network coordinating the recruitment, development and ongoing engagement with course representatives.
  • Develop and maintain a database of elected class representatives and identify gaps within the system.
  • Ensure an effective information flow from class representatives to Sabbatical officers and the CEO,
  • Ensure the provision of regular communication and reporting with class representatives and other officers through meetings; the Student Association website, digital and other means.
  • Ensure the coordination of SAUWS Big Awards for learning and teaching.
Research and Enquiry - OPPORTUNITIES
  • Keep abreast of sector and UWS policy developments.
  • Providing briefing sessions and meeting preparation for CEO, Sabbatical and student officers.
  • Brief student officers in the presentation and negotiation with decision makers
  • Create new opportunities for volunteering as part of managing new voluntary sector relationships
  • Conduct research and enquiry into higher education, learning, teaching and student engagement.
  • Utilise advice work and campaign evaluation data to inform academic development and policy within the University.
  • Undertake data analysis of relevant internal/external campaigns and surveys, e.g. National Student Survey (external).

Essential
  • Degree (or equivalent)

  • Evidence of continuing professional development

EXPERIENCE
Essential
  • Demonstrable experience of working within a third sector membership led organization or young people led organization or within a student association.
  • Experience of research, enquiry and policy formation and review, producing summary documents and delivering briefing
  • Experience of conducting research and enquiry, report writing and presentations
  • Experience of data analysis and the ability to extract information for changes to be implemented.
  • Demonstrable experience of working effectively on own initiative and within a team setting
  • Experience of designing and/or delivering training
  • Effective planning and management of budgets.
Desirable
  • Strong project or event management experience
