Proverb Poster
Proverbs survive in the living language of a people because they effectively communicate closely held values and attitudes. Proverbs are meant to convey cultural knowledge and wisdom, and are often closely tied to a culture’s values and everyday experience. As a result, their meanings are not always readily apparent to us today. As seen in Things Fall Apart, proverbs are an important part of Nigerian and Ibo culture.In this mini-project, you will create a four-quadrant poster explaining and updating a proverb, and arguing its importance to its language, tradition, and culture. Below are the requirements for each quadrant:
- Quadrant #1- Igbo Proverb
- Pick a proverb you encountered while reading or pick one from the list on engrade that interests you. Write this proverb word-for-word in this quadrant.
- You must draw an image representing the meaning of this proverb.
- Quadrant #2- An American Proverb
- Research and find an American proverb with a similarmessage to the Ibo proverb you chose.
- You must draw a picture representing the similaritiesthis proverb shares with the Igbo Proverb.
- Quadrant #3- Updated Proverb
- Rewrite the American proverb using contemporary terms for contemporary contexts. For instance, "Don't store all your data on one jump drive" is an update of "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."
- You must draw a picture representing the relativity of this proverb to our society and our time.
- Quadrant #4- New Proverb
- With your new knowledge of proverbs, write your own which people can relate to.
- You must have a thumbnail image representing the meaning of this proverb.
On the back of your poster, answer the following questions in 200-300 words:
- In your own words, what is a proverb?
- What does the Nigerian proverb reveal to you about Nigerian culture and society?
- How and why are proverbs passed down from generation to generation?
- What does the proverb you created mean and when should it be used? Does it offer advice or generally accepted truth?
Rubric: Your poster must fulfill all of the requirements above. It should be colorful, neat, and attractive. If I cannot read your handwriting, you do not get credit. Take pride in your work! Alltext should be free of grammar and spelling errors. To receive 100%, you must do exemplary work.
