DECIDE:

Article 1

To provide joint supervision for doctoral research, subject to current Portuguese and [replace with the country of the degree granting institution/university] legislation on doctoral studies, said research to be undertaken by [replace with the nameof the PhD student], of [nationality of the PhD student] nationality, hereinafter referred as PhD student with effect from the date of the signature and valid until___/___/___.The responsibilities of the PhD student are effective from___/___/___.

Article 2

Instituto Superior Técnico and [replace with name of the degree granting institution/university] designated herein as contracting parties, agree that the time in which the PhD student is working on the thesis will be divided into alternating periods in each of the contracting parties, with [replace with the description of the period of stay – example >the first 24 months spent at [name of one the contracting party] from January 2008 to December 2009. The remaining time, from January 2010 onward, will be spent at Instituto Superior Técnico – Important: the minimum requirement for stay at IST is one year]. Article 3

After the competent authorities have signed this agreement, and subject to legislation on doctoral studies in force in each country and contracting party, the PhD student will register for study at both contracting parties. The powers and duties of doctoral research supervisor, as defined in the legislation in force in each country and contracting party,will be undertaken jointly by the research supervisors.

Article 5

The two contracting parties recognize the validity of the thesis, which will be preliminarily examined and defended by the PhD student, within the framework of this protocol.

Article 6

Protection of the subject of the thesis, together with its preliminary examination, publication, development and protection of the results of the research carried out by the PhD student will be in compliance with the specific procedures of each of the countries involved in the protocol.

Article 7

The thesis submitted by the PhD student will be defended in a single viva voce examination, recognized by both contracting parties, to be held at [replace with the institutionwhere the thesis discussion will take place; e.g.Instituto Superior Técnico]. The examination of the thesis must be held according to the rules and regulations of both contracting parties.

Article 8

The examination board appointed by the two contracting parties should be defined by the relevant legislation in force in each of the countries and contracting parties and must contain an equal number of members from each contracting party.

Article 9

The PhD student will write the thesis in the English, with an abstract in Portuguese and an abstract in [include additional language and change as appropriate. It is mandatory the inclusion of an abstract in Portuguese].

Article 10

At the viva voce examination, the PhD student will defend the thesis in English[change as appropriate: it is mandatory that the thesis discussion is performed in a language understood by all jury members].

Article 11

Procedures concerning the format, number of copies and mode of submission of the thesis will be defined by the relevant legislation in force in each of the countries and contracting parties.

Article 12

In compliance with legislation in force in each country, and based on the official report drawn up after the viva voce examination, the degree of Doutor em[name of the degree in Portuguese] will be conferred by Instituto Superior Técnicoon the PhD student, and the degree of [replace with name of the degree at the other institution] will be conferred by [replace with name of the degree granting institution/university]. The examination board will decide on the approval and the grading of the thesis according to the rules and procedures of each contracting party.

Article 13

The progress of the PhD studies will be monitored by the following mechanism: at Instituto Superior Técnico by the Comissão de Acompanhamento de Tese and/or at [replace with name of the degree granting institution/university] by [include description of the mechanism for monitoring progress of the PhD studies].The plan of studies of the PhD candidate, to be submitted to the PhD program coordinator at both contracting parties, includes the doctoral-level courses required to fulfill the course requirements at both contracting parties.

Article 14

The PhD student is responsible for obtaining the before-mentioned insurance.The two contracting parties cannot be considered responsible for any injury to the student or damage caused to third parties.
