The China IPR SME Helpdesk and the European Union Business Information Programme in Hong Kong & Macao (IPIM, IEEM & ECC HK), are pleased to invite you to a seminar about how to protect your Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Macau and China.

This morning event will give an introduction to the IPR landscape in Greater China for European Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) based in Macau, and will offer practical business advice and information about how to use the Chinese IP system to enforce your rights effectively, and protect your brand and product designs when dealing with Chinese partners. The speakers will share their experience of IPR protection and enforcement in China, and give practical tips on achieving the results required to do business effectively in China.

The event will be followed by drinks and canapés and networking session with free 20 minute one-to-one consultations with our China IPR legal experts, available on request running in parallel. Free IPR guides will be available at this event.

Speaker Biographies:

Dr Gonçalo Cabral, IPR Legal Adviser, Macau Government

Dr Gonçalo Cabral graduated in Law by the Coimbra Law School, Portugal, in 1986. He holds post-graduations in Communications Law (Coimbra Law School) and Copyright Law (King’s College, London). After training as a solicitor he worked as in-house counsel for Portugal Telecom. He has worked for the Macao Government since 1994, first drafting the Copyright Ordinance and the Optical Media Ordinance, and currently as a legal adviser to the Secretary for Economy and Finance. He represented Macau in the TRIPS Council after the establishment of the SAR.

He also lectured Business Law at the Macao University Business Administration School between 1997 and 1999, and is now an invited lecturer on Intellectual Property Law. In collaboration with the European Studies Institute of Macao, he organises every year a seminar and a summer course on Intellectual Property topics. He has authored of a few articles on Intellectual Property and other legal matters, and has spoken in various seminars and courses.

Audrey Shum, China IPR SME Helpdesk Expert

Audrey Shum is a partner at the Hong Kong office of Stephenson Harwood and has over 10 years of experience on IP laws in Asia, specialising in advising technology and pharmaceutical companies on IP disputes and transfer and licence of technology in Hong Kong and China. She managed the largest copyright infringement claim (back in 2008-2010) in China involving on-line game software, and has advised on numerous agreements involving copyright and software and the related regulatory issues in China.

She also advises clients on technology export and import issues and other related regulatory issues in China, assists clients to review and draft commercial agreements including software licence agreements, manufacturing agreements, and technology transfer agreements, and handles the IP related issues in mergers and acquisitions in Hong Kong and China. Her clients include pharmaceutical, software, online game and high-tech companies, and financial institutions. She has been working with the China IPR SME Helpdesk for over 1 year, presenting at Helpdesk events in both China and Europe.

Beata Suwala, China IPR SME Helpdesk In-House Expert

Beata is a Polish patent attorney and European trademark attorney. She holds a master degree in law from the University of Warsaw and obtained a LL.M degree in IP Law in Spain. Beata has worked for more than three years in law firms in Poland and in Spain where she dealt with international IP portfolios including IP rights prosecutions, enforcement actions and drafting contracts. Afterwards she joined the European IPR Helpdesk, where she advised on IP and in particular on technology transfer under the European Commission's funded projects (the 7th Framework Programme and Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme). Beata joined the China IPR SME Helpdesk in June 2011.

The China IPR SME Helpdesk supports European Union (EU) small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to both protect and enforce their Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in or relating to China, through the provision of free information and services. These take the form of jargon-free, first-line, confidential advice on intellectual property and related issues, plus training events, materials and online resources.

The European Union Business Information Programme (EUBIP) is a four-year (2009-2012) initiative funded by the European Commission that aims to enhance business between companies from the European Union, Hong Kong and Macao and to facilitate EU-related information. It is a partnership between the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM). It is funded by grants from the European Commission, IPIM and IEEM.

EUBIP serves as a vehicle to promote a better understanding between the three economic regions, aiming to leverage the resources, expertise and networks of its three partners to share information and organise and/or fund practical, timely and relevant projects that:

·  Exchange sector expertise and best-practice

·  Reduce market access barriers

·  Build business efficiency

The European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (ECC) is a ‘Chamber of Chambers’. Its membership comprises the 12 European national chambers based in Hong Kong and 1 in Macau. The chairmen of these chambers make up the ECC board of directors.

The ECC’s key objectives are to:

·  Provide a channel of communication within European chambers in Hong Kong and economic circles.

·  Promote commercial, industrial, financial, scientific and other economic exchanges of all types between Hong Kong and the European Union.
