Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme – Update for Registered Instructors

Disclosure Checking - with effect from 28 February 2011

The disclosure checking process will change on 28 February 2011, with the existing disclosure checks being replaced by the "Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme".

Here is a summary of the new rules as they affect registered instructors. For information on how the new rules affect others working with children and / or protected adults in an equestrian setting please contact .

Existing Registered Instructors: Good news! You don't need to do anything at the minute.

The Scottish Government has announced it intends to require everyone who currently works with children and / or vulnerable adults in eligible roles to join the PVG scheme in a rolling programme between 2011 and 2014. We are waiting for the details of how this will work and will contact all Registered Instructors to explain how the rules will affect you once we know more.

To become a member of the PVG scheme you will be asked to complete a form and meet up with one of our authorised signatories to check your identification documents. Once you have been checked by Disclosure Scotland you will receive a “Scheme Record Document”. Keep this safe, as it is evidence you are a PVG scheme members and therefore entitled to work with children and / or protected adults as appropriate.

If you then apply for another job working with children and / or vulnerable adults you won’t need another full disclosure. The new organisation will be able to apply for a “Scheme Record Update”. Although this still involves a form and identity check it is a much simpler and cheaper process from that point.

If by the time we need you to join the Scheme for Register purposes you have already become a scheme member through another route, eg Pony Club or as a school teacher or Guide leader, then we will only need to carry out a Scheme Update for Register purposes.

If you have any queries on the PVG scheme please contact for help.
