Split-Site PhD: Proposal Form

This form is to be used to approve new Split-Site PhD arrangements, or at the point of renewal of an existing Split-Site PhD.

Once the form has been completed, the Collaboration Sponsor must also complete the risk assessment form and follow the Due Diligence Process outlined in paragraphs 56 to 73 of the University’s Collaborative Provision Policy.

A separate Site Visit Checklist should be used to record observations about the partner.

Following a recommendation from the Due Diligence Approval Panel, this form, the completed Due Diligence Form, and the completed Site Visit Checklist should be submitted to Collaborative Provision Sub-Committee.

This Split-Site arrangement is intended to run in accordance with the University’s Procedures and Principles for Split-Site PhDs. In particular

  • Students on this arrangement will be resident in Southampton for a minimum of 12 months (not necessarily over a continuous time period);
  • Students will be admitted by and enrolled in the University of Southampton throughout their programme;
  • Students on this arrangement will be entitled to the normal expectations of the University’s Code of Practice for Research Candidature and Supervision, including expectations on training, research environment, supervision and monitoring;
  • The viva voce will take place in Southampton;
  • On successful completion, the research degree will only be awarded by the University of Southampton;
  • Separate individual doctoral agreements will be put in place for each student enrolled under this arrangement as Annexes to the overarching Memorandum of Agreement.
