Sociology & Anthropology B.S. Program
Proposal for Senior Research
In April of your junior year, you should finalize your plans for how you will fulfill your senior research requirement. You choose the type of research project that best suits your goals.
Choose one set:
Set A:
ANTH/SOCI-501 Senior Research Project
ANTH/SOCI-xxx Program Elective
Set B:
ANTH/SOCI-502 Scholar’s Thesis I
ANTH/SOCI-503 Scholar’s Thesis II
Senior Research Project
The Senior Research Project is a library-based research project that you complete in one semester.
Scholar’s Thesis I & II
Students aiming for graduate school are encouraged to choose the two-semester Scholar's Thesis I & II sequence. In the first semester, you design your own independent research project (and perhaps write a formal proposal, depending upon the requirements of your faculty research mentor) and collect the data (or start to collect the data). In the second semester, you analyze the data and write up your research for a scholarly audience. This intensive, independent research project will hone your research skills and give you a writing sample that will add distinction to your graduate school applications.
Choosing a Faculty Mentor
Whether you choose the Senior Research Project or the Scholar's Thesis I & II option, you need to select a faculty mentor for your project who has the appropriate research background and interests to best help you shape your research project. Please talk with your faculty advisor or one of the Program Co-Directors about who would be the ideal faculty mentor for your project.(The faculty advisor needs to be a full-time faculty member at RIT.) Meet with that potential faculty mentor and discuss your ideas for the project.
