3rd Pct. Property Crimes Court Watch

Holy Cross Lutheran Church Community Room, 1720 E. Minnehaha Parkway

Twenty career burglars who operated in the 3rd Precinct before their arrest and charging will be in the spotlight at the upcoming Property Crimes Court Watch meeting on Monday, Jan. 14.

Five of them are repeat offenders who are close to completing their court procedures and face sentencing soon. Their names and the neighborhood(s) in which their crimes occurred are:

Sector 2: Amanda Lynn Sherwood (Central) and Anthony Michael Peaker (Corcoran);

Sector 3: Derius Ferome Burnett, (Diamond Lake & Hale); Meagan Elizabeth Morales (Keewaydin);

Sector 4: Raymond Jamal Cox (Longfellow).

The Minneapolis Police Department and Hennepin County Attorney’s Office urge residents to write impact statements about these criminals to help educate judges on the serious effects that burglaries and other property crimes have for homeowners and their neighborhoods. These brief, simple letters are given to prosecutors so that judges may consider them as they weigh sentencing options for the offenders.

This bi-monthly Court Watch features Assistant Hennepin County Attorney Paul Scoggin, who will inform participants on the status of the court cases. This includes specifics about the criminal history of the each offender plus details such as the location and data of the crime(s) for which they were arrested, and his/her court process to date. He’ll also explain many aspects of the criminal court process and give updates on the outcomes for burglars who were discussed at the previous meeting last November.

Fact sheets, including mug shots of the offenders, will be available. There will be ample opportunity for questions and answers.

Inspector Michael Sullivan, newly named commander of the 3rd Precinct, will participate and update the community about recent crime trends in the precinct and other issues.

Time is provided for participants to write simple, brief statements about the impact that burglaries have had upon them, their neighborhood where the burglary took place, and on the community at large. These letters to the Court are very helpful in educating judges about the widespread, personal and community effects resulting from property crimes.

Community resident Marcy Tollefson is the volunteer co-chair for the meeting. She follows a tight timeline so the meeting starts on time and lasts one hour. However, residents are welcome to linger and talk with staff after the adjournment. Participants include residents, neighborhood representatives, block club members, and victims.
