Partnership with Government of India
CReNIEO was commissioned by the government of India for conduction research and direct intervention programmes in rural areas. The partnership with the Department of Science and Technology and other government departments aims at taking appropriate and affordable science & technology to the backward communities in rural areas. At the ideological level also, there has been interaction between CReNIEO and the Department of Science and Technology after Dr.K.Rajaratnam’s paper at a seminar on “Technology and Rural development”, Organised by the Department of Science and Technology)

Core Support Programmes under the Department of Science and Technology
The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India had brought the Centre under the core support scheme in November 2001. The programme was commissioned with the idea of bringing scientific know how to the rural areas. CReNIEO had engaged scientists to undertake innovative scientific studies in focused area such as:
- Agriculture and animal husbandry
- Agro processing and horticulture
- Environmental issues and problems of ecology in the PulicatLake area.
Specific areas of investigation
Hydrobiological studies in four stations, namely that of the Pulicat Lake area, the Buckingham Canal, Attipattu and Pudunagar areas, where data on EC, salinity, alkalinity, DO, phosphate, silicate ammonia have been collected.
Pilot Studies have been conducted to determine the optimum ameliorative measures that will condition saline and alkaline nature of the soil for better fertility of crops and fodder grown in the brackish water regions of PulicatLake area.
A biotechnology project had been launched in the Pulicat region so as to improve the fertility of buffaloes by proper feeding through good quality fodder. Artificial insemination facility with frozen semen has been established in Siruphzaverkadu village.
Water testing had been carried out for pH levels from village ponds and wells used for drinking water in the PulicatLake region.
Installation of Fish Aggregation Devices, in the Bay of Bengal, 4 kms away from the shore where monitoring the status of fish catch in Pulicat had been carried out.
Different varieties of fish had been collected and identified using Munro’s key and the samples are stored in the premises of the PulicatNationalMatriculationSchool.
Conducted an observation study on the present status of mangroves in the PulicatLake, particularly at the southern end of the lake.
Sample testing of water quality from two different stations in PulicatLake in which the presence of phytoplankton and zooplankton were being observed.
Recording data of the weather in the PulicatLake area.
Designing a specific local environmental syllabus for the benefit of school children.
Accomplishing the documentation of the endangered herbal plants in the Yercuad hills, while information on the herbal plants has been developed in a CD format.
Studied the potentials of water harvesting in the hills slopes.
Soil tests have been conducted to determine the fertility of the land belonging to 300 marginal farmers in the Yercuad hills.
Training farmers in Yercuad on scientific methods of growing vegetables as well as the patchouli plants.
Producing as well as experimenting with natural pesticides such as panchakavia and pootchiverati
Studying the growth patterns of plants where vermi-compost had been applied with those that have not applied the compost.
Propagation of horti - pasture, horti - silvi pasture, agri - silvi pasture and horti - agri system in the villages surrounding the Pulicat Lake area as well as the Yercuad hills.
